How could I transport a Classic/Vintage Fiat 500 from Sicily?
Hey readers. I would like to transport a antique Fiat 500 to the states. I understand imports have to meet US emission standards. However, does It being an antique allow it to bypass these tests? I see them go for more than $10,000 in the states. My Idea is to make a multiple purchase and ship them in 1 large shipping container. Keep one, pay for shipping charges with the other. man im a genius ; )
Hihi,, Well , You had better do a thorough investigation into all the facts before committing to a deal.
What you likely will find is that you wont be able to work it out in a way that is profitable , because if it was, then other genius's like you would be rich.
If you bring over a container full , likely the government will see you not as a private importer of your own goods but as a business importer.
Privately owned cars usually have to be in your name and driven in the original country for at least 1 year before you transport them.
Because you wont do that Taxes ands fee's will be levied against you as a business merchant , likely for the full ''resale'' value of the cars., and not the purchase cost.
To get around this , some people disassemble the cars down and call them parts.
Parts , or breaker cars come under a different tax which is cheaper.
But that will mean that you will either have to go to Europe and break the cars down to parts or pay someone to do it , which again will eat your profit.
I'me not sure but it is possible that cars brought in under 'parts' will not be able to be registered in the new country.
This is meant to prevent write off scrap cars from being moved and re-registered, when they should be scrapped.
If you wish to sell imported cars for profit then they will have to be licensed.
You will have to prove that the vehicles are compliant and roadworthy according to US laws.
This may involve changing lamps , fitting new seat belts (depending upon the state) and so on.
When you add all of the costs up , it is unlikely that you will break even , thats the way the system is made.
Stick with your gas guzzling Chevy or Ford ,, thats the type of car the government wants you to have.
