AVco Lycoming

what is a melergy engineer?
I don't know how to spell it. Its a type of engineer who works with turbine engines. These engineers are also employed at General Motors Factory and AVCO Lycoming
Try this : Metalurgy - the study of metals - their science, technology and their applications. So a Metalurgist is a person who does it.
A turbine manufacturer like G.E and a motor manufacturer like G.M. would certainly have Metalurgists on the Materials Engineering Staffs.

Avco World Trophy $86.03 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Avco World Trophy, also known as the Avco Cup, was the championship trophy of the original World Hockey Association. The trophys naming rights were sold to the former Avco Corporation, a defense contractor who bought the rights to advertise their consumer finance division. The trophy was mocked by some for its corporate sponsorship and was never to develop anything approaching the significance and sentiment of the Stanley Cup, its National Hockey League rival. Still, the cups design was often seen as creative in that it involved a freelyfloating etched crystal globe embedded in the stem of the cup. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 104 Publication Date: 2011/02/26 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.02 x 0.25 inches |

Lycoming Xr7755 by Benoit, Kn Tr [Paperback] $78.07 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Lycoming XR7755 was the largest pistondriven aircraft engine ever produced; with 36 cylinders totaling about 7,750 in (127 L) of displacement and a power output of 5,000 horsepower (3,700 kilowatts). It was originally intended to be used in the European bomber that eventually emerged as the Convair B36. Only two examples were built before the project was terminated in 1946. Lycoming had not been successful in designing a highpower engine. They had started with an attempt to make a hyper engine that led to the 1,200 hp (890 kW) O1230; by the time the engine was ready, however, new aircraft designs were all calling for more power. They tried again by twinning the engine to produce the H block H2470, which saw some interest in the Vultee XP54 Swoose Goose project. Work on the H2470 ended when the XP54 was cancelled. Avco Lycoming Diesel Engine
Do you know anything about Avco-Lycoming aircraft engines?
A friend told me that whenever a pilot experiences total engine failure because of the simultaneous failure of both magnetos, the engine most likely is manufactured by Avco Lycoming.
Are these engines that bad? How can he tell the manufacturer just be cause both magnetos went bad at the same time and the engine failed?
Help!! I do not know the answer.
JIMMBBO...your answer is the biggest fail I've seen in a long, long time.
ANSWER:
Some Lycoming engines have a single shaft that drives both magnetos. Although extremely rare, a failure of this shaft is the most likely reason for both magnetos to fail simultaneously. Teledyne Continental engines have a separate drive shaft for each magneto.
Simultaneous failure of a single magneto is highly unlikely. The simulteneous failure both magnetos is so rare you can plan on winning the lottery before it happens. That's why there are two separate units on the airplane.
Since the mags are made by vendors (Slick and Bendix are the biggies), any magneto failure would belong to Slick or Bendix, and not be a Lycoming problem.
Lycoming has been making engines for years, and they have a proven history of reliability. I have thousands of hours in Lycoming and Continental powered airplanes in day, night and IFR conditions, and never worried about the reliability of the engine, and firmly believe both are safe to power an airplane.
FYI, a total engine failure is usually due to running out of fuel.
