Question about Crypto school ... Marines?

I have an MOS of 6414, been in the Corps almost 2 years. I attended avionics school at NAS Pensacola and the Comm school at Cherry point.

I'm supposed to go to a crypto school. Does anyone know how this differs from Nav-Aids, where I am now. No one said if my MOS would change.

It isn't so important that I would go to my shop NCOIC. I'm just curious.

I had your MOS at one time. The designations have changed but I was Nav-Aids and went to crypto school at NAS LeMoore. It's probably the same school.

We repaired navigational gear to the transistor, vacuum tube, resistor, etc. level. The crypto school was fairly intense and we learned to maintain them but, only to a board level. In intermediate maintenance, where you are, I rarely saw one. They were pretty reliable. When I went to organizational level, I worked with them fairly often. We didn't use them a lot in those days. But, we were required to test them at intervals and code them daily. When I coded them, I went with a Gunnery Sgt, who was NCOIC of radio shop to a safe where a Marine Officer opened the safe in our presence. We all signed a book that we had opened the safe, with time, etc. and for what purpose. After the KY's were encoded, the code was returned to the safe with the usual signatures and time.

We didn't have a specific MOS for crypto at the time. They may have one now. You may get a crypto MOS and continue working on TACAN's, IFF, and such with a respsonsibility for crypto. I'm sure you work on more than one bench already. Do the KY's come through your shop for repair? If so, you'll still be assigned to the Nav-Aids shop.
