Toys and Models AT6G Texan Silver USAF $219.83 The AT6 Texan advanced trainer built by North American is one of the most widely used aircraft in history. Also known as the pilot maker 15 495 Texans were built between 1938 and 1945. The U.S.A.A.F. procured 10 057 AT6 s; others went to the Navy as SNJ s and to more than 30 Allied nations. Most AAF fighter pilots trained in AT6 s prior to graduation from flying school. Many of the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots in the Battle of Britain trained in Canada in Harvards the British version of the AT6. To comply with neutrality laws U.S. built Harvards were flown north to the border and were pushed across. In 1948 Texans still in USAF service were redesignated as T6 s. To meet an urgent need for close air support of ground forces in the Korean Conflict T6 s flew mosquito missions spotting enemy troops and guns and marking them with smoke rockets for attack by fighterbombers. More than 360 T6 s are still flying. |

Flying Aircraft Carriers of the USAF: Project Ficon $54.55 Project FICON (Fighter conveyer): In the early 1950s, the Air Force conducted a series of experiments to establish the feasibility of carrying, launching, and retrieving jet reconnaissance airplanes from giant Convair RB36 bombers. It was hoped that the bombers would carry the reconnaissance jets to the perimeter of the Soviet Union and then release them to penetrate the air defenses. Tests of the concept were conducted in 1952 and 1953 with a Republic F84E Thunderjet and the YF84F Thunderstreak prototype. Twentysix Republic RF84F Thunderflashes and ten Convair GRB36D carriers were modified for the project. In 1955, a squadron of carriers was established at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington. A squadron of parasites was established at nearby Larson Air Force Base. Training operations began in December 1955, but the composite aircraft system faced competition from the Boeing RB52B, Lockheed U2, and the development of aerial refueling.
