Gyrocopter Pilot

How does the thrill of a gyrocopter compare to that of a helicopter? (And a few more Qs about gyrocopters)?

I always wanted to be a helicopter pilot and considered doing it through the military but now I am thinking of pursuing a different career. I thought I would eventually get my pilot's license and just buy a personal helicopter, but thinking realistically, the cheap ones are $200,000 and I would never have that much money to spare.

So recently I came upon "gyrocopters", and they seem like they would give me all the thrill I've wanted flying and are cheap as dirt! I saw some for around 20 grand; that's just like buying a car and just assuming that most families have around two cars, I would much rather just have one car and one gyrocopter.

So anyways, I was wondering how the thrill of flying a gyrocopter compares to a helicopter? And also, if they are so cheap and such a great recreational activity, why have I never heard of them before? Are they even that cheap, just around $20,000? Are you allowed to fly these things in neighborhoods? And how safe are they?

The difference between a helicopter and a gyrocopter is like the difference between a dodge viper and a toyota yaris. They both have 2 seats and both satisfy a driving crave, but its a different experience altogether.

You'd have alot of fun in a helicopter, but the road to there is pretty long and unless you're rich (which you say you're not) or looking to work as a helicopter pilot, the training isn't enough. You cannot fly a helicopter on an airplane license. You might want to consider going on those touristy helicopter rides. Some even let you take control of the heli in the air (dual controls, so that if you beef up they can save you)

A gyrocopter/autogyro is plenty of fun, especially if you're a technical guy and want to build your own ride. It's cheaper, but it doesn't go as high as a helicopter can. Kind of like a scooter and a car.

You need FAA to clear your aircraft to fly if you're in the US. You have to abide by air traffic regulations, obviously the authorities wont let you fly one into an airplane (too easy/cheap for extremists), so you'd have to have some form of air traffic understanding. You probably would have to take off from an airport (private).

So no, you cant fly them in your neighbourhood, to pick up your girlfriend or to go to work in. And they are as safe as you make them fly well, keep safety in mind and stay away from power cables and you should be fine.

Check a search engine, im pretty sure you can find a autogyro club near you.
