Indicator Gyro

The attitude indicator on a small plane get fried in null visibility! Can the pilot use a water bottle to fly?

The conditions are daytime IFR. Not only is the attitude indicator and its backup system dead, but so is everything else that runs on electricity and gyros and vacuum pumps and whatnot.

And BTW, can this really happen and can a plane's motor even run if the battery's dead?

You do.

Skipper, I hope you don't have students you tell to spin the aircraft and hope they see the ground in time to recover. Gene Littlefield, a former airshow pilot, taught me a neat little trick for getting out of IMC with nothing but a compass (and without spinning the airplane into a hole in the ground). Bring the power to idle, slowly bring in full flaps (if you are able to, without any electrical power the flaps won't come down on some piston singles), and begin trimming the aircraft all the way to the nose-up stop. Without the prop blast over the tail, the nose-up trim will not induce a stall, but instead generate around a 400 fpm descent (much more recoverable than a spin or steep spiral which can yield around 2000 fpm descent). Use your feet and compass to hold heading and keep your hands off the yoke. Your technique might have worked for airmail pilots, but keep in mind their mortality rate was a little higher than what we want to see today among GA pilots. Additionally, most training aircraft today won't stay in a spin, but go into a steep spiral which can be much more disorienting and deadly in IMC.

As for the original question--The engine will continue running without a battery or alternator. The spinning of the engine turns the magnetos which generates its own source of electricity to power the spark plugs in an airplane. As for the water bottle, it will work as an inclinometer, or ball, but not as an attitude indicator. Systems in an aircraft are designed so that it is extremely unlikely that you will lose all your instruments.

Precession of Attitude Indicator....?

The DG precesses during flight and I have to periodically reset it to align with the magnetic compass.... what about the attitude indicator? Is there ever precession of the AI gyro? Likewise, what does the AI gyro use as it's level reference? Is it set up in such a way as to use the airframe as the level reference (that would make the most sense?) or does it just use the attitude it's at when it first spins up as the level reference (what if the plane is parked on a non-level surface....?)

The attitude indicator is designed to correct itself for precession. This is done with pendulous vanes. On the gyro there are four (or more) vanes attatched at the top, as the gyro tilts due to precession one of the vanes is pulled open by gravity (since it's not vertical anymore) when this vane opens it allows a small jet of air to force the gyro back toward it's upright vertical position. This allows the insrument to use gravity as a reference to continuously right itself. It also can cause errors. When your in a turn the forces cause the attitude indicator to try to 'right' itself to the turn attitude. You can see this by executing a 180 degree turn then roll out level. The attitude indicator will initially show a slight turn in the opposite direction but it will correct itself after several seconds.
