I have a 1946 North American Navion, and it cuts out at high altitudes?

Any one with a Navion have any similar problems? It runs perfect until you go above 5,000ft. It does have a newly overhauled pressurized carb, and the engine only has around 25 hrs smoh. We've been told that there could be a missing honeycomb looking part in the air intake going to the carb, but haven't had anyone look at it yet. Could the carb just need adjusted?
No worries, I won't go above 4,500 ha,ha. All I want to know is if any one has had any similar problems w/Navions, I know it shouldn't be flown.
The mechanic said that because the aircraft owner is not alowed to do that kind of work on an aircraft without having and A&P certificate. Don't be saying that to often, if the FAA finds out you're in trouble, but thanks for your input
The mixture was leaned out, and the carb heat was on, and it still kept missing. There was no pattern to the missing, it was sporatic.
