pursuing a career in aviation?
i'm currently in high school and i want to be a pilot- thats the simple part. i love planes and engineering. what kind of degrees do i need to earn in college in order to be a commercial airline pilot, once i get a private license and commericial license??? also, what grade-level students would they accept [A, B, C?]- just wondering if i could qualify. which subjects/material should i learn in high school/college [im guessing physics, math, science?]. any and all information would be greatly appreciated, thanks
I would check out Embry-Riddel Aeronautical University to answer your questions.

The FAA does not require degrees to fly commercially, but a degree definitely helps to further your career.

Dayton Aviation (Paperback) $40 Hallowed skies blanket Dayton, Ohio, a city once known as the "Cradle of Aviation"--and with good reason. It was in Dayton that two brothers became the unlikely creators of the world`s first airplane, but that is just the start of the story. Dayton Aviation: The Wright Brothers to McCook Field examines Dayton`s civil and military aviation history from its start with the Wright Brothers to the founding of Wright and Patterson Fields in the 1930s, a period that saw the construction of the world`s first airport, the Huffman Flying Prairie. Dayton was home to the first airplane factory and, later, the world`s largest aircraft factory. The city introduced the world to crop dusting, landing lights, free-fall parachutes, pressurized cabins, night aerial photography, the first private-cabin plane, and the first strategic bomber. In downtown Dayton, office workers could look out windows and watch history unfold as pilots broke one world record after another in the skies over the city. Dayton was, and still is, the airplane capital of the world. These images, captured by the founding fathers of aviation, show that from 1904 through the 1930s, if it was happening in the air, it was happening in Dayton. |

Aviation Maintenance at Texas State Technical College
Becoming an Airline Pilot?
Hello everyone, As of right now I am 21 years old, 75 college credits working towards my Bachelor's degree, and seriously thinking about a change in my major. I am majoring in accounting right now and was thinking of becoming an airline pilot. I was never in the Air Force, and never have flown a plane (except Flight Simulator). I have heard some Airlines require a Bachelor's Degree, but in what? If I finish out with my Bachelor's degree in accounting, would I be eligable for Flight School?
Ya see, I have a flight school literally right down the block from me. Dowling College Aviation School. It is the only one around. Can I take out student loans just like college to go there? Also, do student loans cover private flying lessons? Well, please tell me how many hours of what and in what I have to do to become a pilot. Also, if you can, please tell me other kinds of non-military pilot jobs I can get. Is it too late to make a carreer change?????
Thank you very much
You can have a degree in ANYTHING as long as you have one... and yes, you can take lessons!... There are many scholarships for starting pilots and you can take out student loans that you do not have to repay until you are done with your training but I would recomend taking out as small a loan as possible because you will not be making much money when you finish training... Now, if you want to be a private pilot, you can stop there... but if you want to get paid to fly, which it sounds like you do, you can stay in training and get your commercial and instrument ratings...
A career change is not something you should make on a "great idea" especially one like this, you are leaving a $100,000 field for a $25,000 field... at least for your first few years... It takes alot of dedication to get to where you want to be in the industry... If you do chose to pursue it, good luck!
