US Navy seal sniper
Do navy SEAL snipers go to the navel academy first to Start out?
I am 14 and I always wanted to be a navy SEAL sniper but i don't know if you go to college and take the NROTC or just go to the Navy Academy. Can you help?
You don't want to go in as an officer. Those who tell you otherwise really can't know what they're talking about. They are either civilians in total ignorance except what they've learned from movies, or they're enlisted and have a rather biased idea of what officers are about.
Why not go SEAL as an officer? It's tough as enlisted... as an officer it's darn near impossible. Every officer program of which I'm award (and that includes Annapolis) has a limit on the number it allows to go Special Warfare. Those few who make the cut go to Coronado where they face the same odds of failure as the enlisted guys... four in five fail.
But there's nothing wrong with going to school and getting your baccalaureate. It'll give you options. It'll give you the option of going officer if you decide against SEAL... or even if you decide to get Special Warfare. It'll allow you to enlist as an E-3, giving you about a year jump on the guys without the degree. And, when you're up for promotion to E-7, you won't have to sweat he degree requirement for Chief. An when you retire, of if you decide to leave before retirement, you'll have a degree that mmight open more doors for employment as a civilian.
But you'll have to get it on your own. If you go through the Academy, or ROTC, you're pretty much committed to being an officer.
I enlisted at age 20 with a BA in Math. I went in as an E-3. When it came time for me to reenlist for my E-6, somebody apparently rediscovered my degree and recommended me for OCS. I retired at age 45.
