ADS-B and Mode S - are they related?

I'm not sure that I understand the new rules with ADS-B or how it will interact with current avionics. As I'm looking at aircraft to buy, I'd like to keep an eye out for these things. I'm looking to get something with a Garmin 430w. I see some aircraft have Mode-S transponders (GTX 330). Will the combination of these two satisfy the new future ADS-B requirements? Also, if I had the mode S, what additional equipment would I need to make traffic available on the Garmin 430w?

Mode S with extended squitter (not all mode S has that) can display traffic on the 430W only in areas that have the rebroadcast of the data. Major areas such as LA, Houston, DFW, Chicago etc do have that available but once you "leave" the area Mode S doesn't show other traffic at this time.

There will be more equipment needed than the current equipment supplies! Some 330 units may be upgradeable but don't count on it.

Since there are still some things that the FAA has to do to have full ADS-B coverage over the entire US, I wouldn't worry about getting the equipment at this point. Over the next couple of years more gear will be available and the costs will drop considerably.
