Vor Ils NAV
Vor Ils NAV
Hi, guys, need IFR help?

Hi, I am a would-be pilot,I have a lot of hours flying VFR (250+) on FSX and I am using the lessons feature and studying IFR. So far I learned to fly a VOR approach and ILS approach. Normally, if the course in-bound heading is 105 degrees, you tune in the NAV 1 and 2 radios, to the right frequencies, then set the OBS to 105.

But I tried the same in an Airliner, I tuned in the right frequencies and set the glass display to VOR.
But now I am confused; do you have to set the OBS in a modern jet like in, say, a Cessna 172? (or is there no OBS in a jet?)

Most aircraft with advanced avionics feature an HSI instead of the VOR OBS instrumentation. There is a course selector knob, usually on the autopilot (or flight guidance) panel. You use that to set the course you want, then fly the HSI needle similar to how your use the VOR needle.

Here's a thought for you. If you like flying so much, go take a flying lesson (if you havn't already). For real. It might sound funny, but all that practice on FSX is not going to be a real big help when you fly a real airplane. In fact, it may be a detriment. You are basically teaching yourself how to fly, without the benefit of an instructor who can help you learn properly. You might be learning some very bad habits, and it is EXTREMELY difficult to "unlearn" bad habits.

Just a thought. The link below will help you find a flight school. Hope this helps!

FSX Basic VFR Flight Tutorial Using GPS Navigation ILS Landing - Narrated By Me !

displaying info 738?

ummm...when I'm flying in the 738 i have to use my gps (FSX) to see my nm distance. On my ILS display, it'll have DME with random numbers, and the nav display shows VOR 1 and VOR 2 with changing numbers, and they both have ICAO codes above them. I'm really confused - I thought the DME is supposed to display my distance from the airport im goin to, and what's with these VOR things? Can I adjust them?
i know what dme and vor stand for etc im asking how to tune/set them

the vor is a thing on the ground which helps you navigate. most of them have a dme as well, hence they are what is termed 'vor/dme'. they radiate at a certain frequency. usually between 114-116MHZ. to use them you have to dial up your vor's to the said frequency and then you can see the 'radial' you are on by turning the little knob (called the obs) and also you can read the distance you are from it directly. the dme will only tell you the distance from the airport if there is a vor/dme planted right there dude. try dialing up the frequency on one of your vor's and then fly right to it, you will see the number counting down, that is your dme telling you how many nautical miles you are from it. fly away from it and it will count up. turn the obs and the 'needle' will eventually centre. that tells you what radial you are on. good luck.
