How can I settle with collection agency?

I owe about $3000 to credit card company a few years ago. It went to collection agency, now they tells me I owe $6000. I tried to settle the debt with them. But They told me, they could ony settle with 80% of the debt and no payment plans for me.
I have 2 little ones now and one on the way. I just can't pay large amount at once.
Agency also told me that I have 30days ( I have 3day left until then ), otherwise It'll go to local attorneys office..

What do I do next? I don't want to get serve with a paper or have to deal as court.

This may just be a pressure tactic that they love to use.

Never talk to collectors on the phone. Do everything by mail so you have a record of whats happening.

Send them a debt validation letter tomorrow, send it certified mail return receipt. (create a papertrail)

They have to provide you with validation, from the original creditor, within 30+5 days after they receive it. (the +5 days is for return mailing)

Then check your states statute of limitations (SOL) to see if you are still within SOL. If you are out of SOL, you are not legally bound to pay them a penny.

Can a collection agency harrass my ex husband?

I called them, set up a payment plan, gave them my phone number yet they keep calling my ex husband which is a jerk already and now my ex is causing more problems for me. I haven't been married to him for over 5 years. Why does the collection agency keep buggin him? Like they are really gonna get money out of him? I already told them to stop harrassing him and that my number is the number to harrass me on, yet they keep calling him? What can I do in regards to getting them to stop bugging him?

No they can not contact him unless this is a post-judgment against both of you. Send them a certified letter/return receipt informing them of the following law: (note paragraph (b)

15 U.S.C. § 1692c. Communication in connection with debt collection

(a) Communication with the consumer generally
Without the prior consent of the consumer given directly to the debt collector or the express permission of a court of competent jurisdiction, a debt collector may not communicate with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt.

(b) Communication with third parties
Except as provided in section 1692b of this title, without the prior consent of the consumer given directly to the debt collector, or the express permission of a court of competent jurisdiction, or as reasonably necessary to effectuate a post-judgment judicial remedy, a debt collector may not
communicate, in connection with the collection of any debt, with any person other than the consumer, his attorney, a consumer reporting agency if otherwise permitted by law, the creditor, the attorney of the creditor, or the attorney of the debt collector.
