What is better - an ultralight aircraft or a powered parachute?

The ultralight is a minimax. www.jdtmini-max.com The aircraft has to be FAR 103 legal.
The max 1030 model. The aircraft has to be under $10,000.

Both of these fall under the category of ultralight aircraft under FAR Part 103.

My personal preference would be for the Mini-Max, because it flies and controls with three-axis control (rudder, elevator,aileron) like a standard category aircraft. The Mini-Max also flies faster than the powered parachute.

The downside is that unless you've found one for sale that's already built, you'll have to spend between 300-400 hours in your garage building the Mini-Max from a kit, while the powered parachute can be purchased ready-to-fly.

While a pilot license is not required to fly an ultralight aircraft, it is wise to get some instruction in order to be able to do it safely.

Remember... Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man... Landing is the first!

Powered Parachuting



Tax on a powered parachute?

If you purchase one of those powered parachutes (the compact backpack type) do you have to pay taxes and/or get registration on it. If so, how much is it?
Also, just as a side note, I am looking into purchasing one because I want an affordable way to get the thrill of flight that I love so much. I am looking for fun, cheap (less than 10,000 dollars), compact enough to store in the back of an SUV easily, and good quality. If you can think of anything that would be better, please feel free to comment.

As long as it complies with FAR Part 103, the FAA considers a powered parachute to be an ultralight aircraft. In the USA, ultralight aircraft do not require a license or registration. Depending on the state where you live, you may have to pay sales tax on the purchase, but that should be it.
