Powered Parachute Rides
Sudden drop in motorcycle mpg - 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 650r?
I've been riding this bike for almost 2 years, with about 6k miles on it. Before I saw any decrease in mpg, I regrettably left my bike (with a bike cover) outside in the snow for a while. When the snow melted, I changed the oil + filter, and began riding again but I saw a sudden decrease in mpg. I always ride conservatively and get about 50 mpg, but suddenly for the last 6 fill-ups (since the snow), I've gotten 40 mpg.
I have not ridden any harder, changed city/highway ratio, crashed it, deflated the tires, changed gas type, added a parachute, etc. Bike seems to have the same amount of power (maybe not the spark plugs), and sounds the same too. I included info about the winter situation because it started around that time, but it could be a coincidence. Any ideas? Thanks!
The first time you rode it ( got it hot) should have dissipated any moisture, It is possible the the temperature change caused a small piece of trash to break loose from the tank or fuel line and lodge in the TB's or injectors ( Fuel Injection: Digital fuel injection with two 38mm Keihin throttle bodies ). But you would think you would get a slight miss from it (but not necessarily). Consider the carb/'injector cleaner at the link below. I use it on all my vehicles ( including my bike).
The only other thing I can think of is the correct oil filter and oil weight. A heavier oil will decrease mpg. Good luck
