In your opinion, are stand-up comedians a good barometer of ethnic cultural norms?

I listen to satellite radio in my vehicle and I hear comedians of varied ethnic backgrounds using their families, friends and ethnic communities as material for their stand-up routines. They are very specific in identifying the ethnic groups and how their families tend to bring up kids, treat each other, and how they relate to the world in general, etc. Two that are very well known and specifically come to mind are Chris Rock and George Lopez. Paul Rodriguez does a lot of that as well. White comedians tend to talk about white sub-groups (trailer trash, red necks, southerners, Lutherans, and the various caucasian ethnic groups like Irish, German, etc.), and sometimes just whites in general.

I tend to think these guys are, in spite of their obvious goal of exaggerating in order to make money by making people laugh, a good source of realistic information on the norms of their respective cultures.

What say you?

I agree. I think, like most people, they speak on what they know and whether or not you find what they have to say to be politically correct or not, it's still their truth. They utilize their comedic talents to make light of their personal experiences (whether it be cultural or not), and they definitely do have the freedom to get away with saying things most of society cannot.
