How bad is it when oil is on the spark plug?

97 Crown Vic. Had oil on the spark plug threads, all over the part where the spark happens AND on the inside of the spark plug boot but not on the outside of the boot. I think the oil might be coming from the outside and dripping onto the spark plug. What's going on?

97 crown vic? How many miles on this engine and has it ever been a taxi or cop car?
There are only 3 ways for oil to get into the cylinders.
1. Through the intake manifold. This is normally through the crankase relief valve and will be made much worse if there is enough wear in the cylinders to allow blowby into the crank.

2. Through the valve guides. If the valve guides and seals are badly worn oil can be sucked down the valve guides into the cylinders. It is not as common as people think.

3. Up past the piston. If the cylinders and rings are worn the oil comtrol rings will not keep the oil on the cyliinder walls from coming up into the combustion chambers.
This is common and when it is bad it usually results in the crank case relief valve passing oil into the intake manifold too.

All of these indicate an engine that is worn out.
A 97 Crown Vic is likely not worth a new engine if it saw fleet service.
If the body and transmission is good it might be worth putting a used motor into.
If the body is very good I would consider a rebuilt motor, and possibly transmission and suspension work.
But it would need to be exceptional.
97 Crown Vics sell for about $1,500 at auto auctions, half the price of a rebuilt motor.

how spark plugs work



When replaceing spark plug wires, how do I remove the plastic pieces with slots that hold the wires in place?

I have a 01 Ford Focus and I am replacing the spark plug wires. I am having problems removing the small plastic pieces that hold them in place so they do not rub against each other. Any suggestions?

Most times you dont have to the wires just pop out and the you pop the new ones back into the same spot. if it requires you take them out just pull from one side either up or down and pull it out at an angle. if it is an older car they will most likely break if you pull them out but they are cheap.
