What Do You Think Of The Novel Don Quixote?
It's on my list of novels that I want to read.
What do you think of it? Does it deserve it's reputation as one of the greatest novels ever written? Is it a difficult book to read?
BQ: Favourite work by Migeul De Cervantes, apart from Don Quixote?
i've read the first part and enjoyed it very much... i'm having a bit of a rest though as it's quite long and i'm reading it in spanish, so language -wise i've found it a bit heavy going... lots of words that are no longer in common usage, lots of extra explanatory notes to get through. i've no idea what the english translation is like...
the first part is very funny imo... as you get to know Don Quixote you begin to like him more and more... he's kinda 'innocently barmy' , which causes him allsorts of problems that more often than not end with him on the receiving end of a beating... and you can't help but laugh... the poor fella... yeah good read and you've inspired me to finish the second part, cheers

Why is Don Quixote the first modern novel?
Why is Don Quixote considered to be the first modern novel?
Before Cervantes' time, books weren't written like they are now. The idea of a long, fictional narrative was basically non-existent back then. Books were mainly written as historical narratives, philosophical treatises, scientific works, plays, or epic poems. The closest thing to a "novel" would have been something like the Iliad, or the Odyssey, or the Divine Comedy. But each of those was written in verse. Then along comes Don Quixote, which looks a lot like the fiction of Homer or Dante, but written in PROSE (non-verse). Don Quixote is considered the first modern novel because it was one of the first to contain a fictional narrative, written in prose.
