How did the names "Zori" and "Flip-Flop" originate?

Both are weird names, and I was just wondering how someone came up with them to call a shoe that.
The flip-flop one seems a bit self explanatory, but still, I'd like to know.

Zori is Japanese. It's just a combination of the characters for grass and the character for "wear on the feet" because originally Japanese sandles were made from plants.
Flip-flops are basically zori without the straw (but Japanese call what you would call "flip-flops" zori too). They're probably just named for the sound they make.
