Are the drums a hard instrument to learn and like how much is a decent set usually?

I was thinking I want to try the drums out. How much do they cost? And how long does it usually take to get decent at playing? I have played other instruments before. Do they sell things that can silence the drum when you are practicing? What do you think of the drums? DO you think a 16 year old girl would do well with them?

How much the kit costs is entirely up to you. You can pay a few hundred for a basic kit, then upgrade later if you decide to do so, or blow a few thousand bucks right now on a top of the line kit that you might neglect 'cause you aren't sure if you really like drumming or not. (I recommend going with a basic, but decently made, kit for now.)

Actually, I started with just a practice pad (twenty-five bucks) and a pair of decent sticks (about twelve bucks). That's sufficient to learn the rudiments and other basics, like how to hold the sticks. And the practice pad isn't very loud, either, so you don't have to worry about making too much noise.

Some people have more talent with drums than others. I can't tell you how long it'll take to become "good" at drumming. What level's considered "good" anyway? Phil Collins? Jordan from Slipknot? The cruddy garage band living behind me who can barely hang onto a rhythm for half of a three-minute metal song?
