Loop Cable
Loop Cable
What is the purpose of these black containers where the cable is wrapped in two loops or three loops.?

All of you noticed in audio cables or in computer cables that sometimes at the end of the cable is a container holding loops of the cable. I noticed it holds metal plates inside. Removing it actually extends the cable a little. What is its purpose ? Does it boost some signal ? example of cable here: http://www.szprice.com/product_images/x/cpa_chargersxca_100a__34871.jpg Can it safely be removed ?

The purpose of which is to reduce emissions form the audio systems or computers that may affect other devices nearby. It is an FCC requirement.

I answered one question similar to yours. Here's the link.

Does the XFX GeForce GTS 250 Video Card come with an audio loop cable for HDMI audio?

I have been looking to buy a new graphics card for my computer and i would like to buy the XFX GeForce GTS 250 Video Card - 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) Dual Link DVI, SLI Ready(from Tiger Direct) but it doesnt say it comes with an HDMI audio loop cable unlike the PNY GeForce GTS 250 Video Card - 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) Dual Link DVI, SLI Ready which does come with the audio loop cable. Now you all are probably saying why not just get the one that comes with the audio loop cable? and i will answer with; the XFX graphics card looks cooler. :) So if it does come with the cable i would rather get the XFX. Does anyone own the XFX card and knows what it comes with?

official site says it comes with

DVI Adapter, HDTV Component Adapter, 6 Pin Y Power Cable

so no it does not come with your hdmi cable

One Response to “Loop Cable”

  1. Jen Says:

I think it's a combination of the yarn and the stitch. Normally cables are countered with purl stitches to make them stand out (the cables are knit stitches).

Going left to right on the inside it looks like you have the left edge of cable, a column of knit stitches, a column of unknown (which I agree, looks like fisherman's), another column of knit, and then your right edge.

This is a closed-loop cable (rather than a braid-type cable) and part of the design here is that the yarn is a multi-strand yarn instead of a single ply (Lamb's Pride Bulky, Manos) or a cabled yarn (which is not used for cabling). Multi-strand means they can start off with finely plied wool and make bigger yarn out of finer plies. It's also what gives you that look where the right side of your stitches look like one vertical column.

Here's an article with pictures – Knitty

I think the way to tell if it's fisherman's is to remember that to get f-rib you knit into the stitch below the one on the needle…so when you rip out or pull the stitches apart it should look like it's not really connected to the rest of the column on the right hand side of the stitch.

So my guess is: cable st, k1, fr1, k1, cable. But honestly, it could easily be a column of seed stitch where the knit stitches are fisherman's rib and the purl stitches aren't. Wish I had a Barbara Walker book!

    Don't know though.
