I am a civil eng who would like to start own business as a construction materials supplier?

I dont know how to start, my idea was to get some brochures from manufacturers then call up local contractors to offer them those materials at the manuf. prices plus commission, but then i thought a contractor can go straight to the manufac. My other idea was to contact international manufac who dont have representatives here and offer them to market and sell their products here in quebec for a commision. Please help with some ideas. thanks

I have been a civil engineer 32 years and know some suppliers. It takes money and contacts to start your own construction materials business.

Consider these questions.
1. Do you know a lot of contractors? Remember that they all presently have someone they buy their products from.
2. Do you have a good knowledge of the producte that you want to sell? The Contractors will sometimes depend on you to help them get the right materials.
3. Are you familiar with local bid laws and how private projects are bid? You will be assisting Contractors in these areas.

There are many more questions. If you know the answers, great. If you don't, get a technical sales job so you can sell the products that you are interested in.

Contractors usually develop a relationship with suppliers and depend on them for assistance. You need to become the person thay know and trust.

Please be ethical though. It is not right to try to develop clients for yourself while you are working for someone else. Do a good job for your employer just like you will want your employees to do a good job for you.
