River Jacksonville

safe areas in jacksonville florida...?
theres an apartment complex im thinking about going to when i move to jacksonville either next month or october.. lakewood village apartments. its on arcadia drive. its right next to what i THINK to be st johns river. not sure. across that water is the jax NAS. anyways im just wondering if anyone can help me to be sure this area is safe crime wise and all that. thanks.
thanks keatykat! well im moving there because my navy boyfriend is getting stationed there for his first command. the 2nd tip would be kind of difficult for me to do because i live in texas.. so yea i cant really drive over there. but i might be going next month early and stay at a hotel to start looking for an apartment and also a job. the apartment i was looking into has variable lease.. what exactly is that. im thinking its where you pay month by month and stop the lease when your ready to move.. is this correct?
thanks for the advice!!
Hi there - I've lived all over the country and understand your concerns firsthand. My dad gave me great advice many years ago in this situation:
1.) do some research...for instance, you can either call the police department in that area and ask them if they have a source available to research the types of crimes that occurred in that area (sometimes online). They will be all public record so it's available.
2.) drive by the area at night...a few times. (including on a weekend - Friday or Saturday). The nighttime will definitely have a different feel to it and will let you know in your gut how you feel about the area. Always listen to your gut!
3.) I'm not sure why you are moving to that area (work, school, relocation, etc.) but it's always a good idea to ask around at these places where people live (especially older people that have been there awhile / Jacksonville and seem trustworthy/knowledgable) to see if they know anything about this area....or where they'd recommend living otherwise.
The last thing you want to do is get stuck in a rental lease or home purchase w/o doing REAL research like this beforehand. Good luck!

Jacksonville River City Skyway Tour
Which QB to start: Aaron Rodgers vs. Jacksonville, or Phillip Rivers vs. Kansas City?
Im in the same position and Im starting Rivers this weekend. It's a division/conference game and is a MUST win for any chance of making the playoffs. V. Jackson in becoming an awesome target for Rivers and he knows it. This is a statement game for the Chargers, and expect Rivers to be the loudest in making such a statement

Hey Wendy –
Love keeping up with your blog. You’re a great writer. A couple words of advice from someone who went through this several years ago. Now, I feel awful if I don’t get in my daily run.
First, set some interim goals along the way to your final goal; like maybe breaking the 160 pound barrier or running the whole 30 minutes, and celebrate when you reach them. Buy yourself something, like a new running top or shorts or new music. Just something to motivate you to make it to the next one ad keep you running. Then, set the next one, but keep it short and easily achievable.
Second, here’s the bad news. You won’t lose much weight just exercising. Diet and exercise go together. Exercise alone burns fat, but builds muscle. Muscle is denser than fat so you’ll lose inches, and feel better, but you won’t lose much weight. I suggest getting on Weight Watchers. That’s what I did. I lost 50 pounds. It took a while, but I steadily lost about 2 to 3 pounds a week. You can do it on line. You don’t need to go to those stupid meetings, especially if you’re already motivated. You can keep a daily diary of everything you put in your mouth and watch your weekly point totals. You can also claim credit for your exercise. It’s just another tool to keep you motivated. Weight Watchers is one of the only diet programs that really works, because it trains you to eat right and make permanent lifestyle adjustments. But I don’t mean to be a sales man here just I highly recommend it. You can also try it for free, so you have nothing to lose.
Third, get yourself a heart monitor and use it to regulate your training. They’re not too expensive, about $100.00, but they work really well and provide you good feedback on your progress. Again, you can buy it for yourself as a reward for meeting an interim goal. It will keep you motivated and make you eager to run.
Last, don’t over do it. Nothing kills an exercise routine like an injury. One step forward and two steps back. Gradually ramp up your routine as your fitness improves.
Love to have you down for the 15K Gate River Run. It’s March 12th this coming year. We expect about 15,000 runners. The track takes you through some of the nicest city neighborhoods on the St John’s River in Jacksonville. It starts and finishes at Everbank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars and crosses two bridges along the way. This one will be my third. Think about it. Check it out at http://www.gate-riverrun.com
