Xb39 Superfortress $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Boeing XB39 Superfortress was a United States prototype bomber aircraft, a single example of the B29 Superfortress converted to fly with alternative powerplants. It was intended to demonstrate that the B29 could still be put into service even if the first choice of engine, the aircooled Wright R3350 radial engine, ran into development or production difficulties. Starting life as the first YB29 delivered to the United States Army Air Forces, it was sent in November 1943 to the the Fisher Body Aircraft Development Section of General Motors to be converted to use Allison V342017 liquidcooled X24 (twinV12, common crankcase) inline engines. Testing on it began in early 1944. Further development of the engine and the aircraft was delayed by a series of changes in the planned turbosuperchargers as the originally specified GE Type CM2 twostage turbosupercharger became unavailable due to demands on GEs production of its other turbosuperchargers. Toys and Models AB29FT B29 Superfortress Fifi $233.94 The Boeing B29 Superfortress was a fourengine propellerdriven heavy bomber that was flown by the United States in World War II and the Korean War. The B29 remained in service in various roles throughout the 1950s. The British Royal Air Force flew the B29 named the Washington in RAF service and the Soviet Union produced an unlicensed copy as the Tupolev Tu4. The name Superfortress was derived from that of its wellknown predecessor the B17 Flying Fortress. The B29 was the progenitor of a series of Boeingbuilt bombers reconnaissance aircraft trainers and tankers including the B29 variant B50 Superfortress. The later jet powered B47 Stratojet and the B52 Stratofortress carried on the lineage. The B29 was one of the largest aircraft to see service during World War II. A very advanced bomber for this time period it included features such as a pressurized cabin an electronic firecontrol system and remotecontrolled machinegun turrets. Though it was designed as a highaltitude daytime bomber in practice it actually flew more lowaltitude nighttime incendiary bombing missions. It was the primary aircraft in the American firebombing campaign against the Empire of Japan in the final months of World War II and carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Unlike many other WWIIera bombers the B29 remained in service long after the war ended with a few even being employed as flying television transmitters for the Stratovision company. The type was finally retired in the early 1960s with 3 960 aircraft in all built. B29 named Fifi is currently registered as airworthy but it is presently grounded due to costly engine problems.
