Watt Var

Is it true that transformers can only be used with AC or pulsating DC voltages?

I'm having a bit of a nerd moment right now, and I plan on using some small transformers for some projects of mine in the future. Unfortunately, in my electronics engineering courses, we didn't cover transformers that much (instead we kept covering the humble diode...). I know what they do, and how it's done....I just don't know what they're limited to.

One more question...how are transformers rated? Is it in VAr's, VA, or Watts? It got confusing at that point...

Thinking back on it, I don't even know why I asked this question. Looking at a couple of equations, and doing some number substitution, it makes perfect sense. Mental lapse on my part.

The other people have correctly answered but I have an assignment for you that will prove them correct. Connect the secondary of a transformer to an oscilloscope. Connect an AC supply to the primary and note the "in" and "out" oscillographs. Now put a diode (half-wave rectifier in the primary) and note the two oscillographs. Finally, put a full-wave rectifier in the primary and note the two oscillographs. You will be surprised by the results.

What color do you think i should go with?

I'm looking at getting a new bern snowboarding helmet. I'm definitely getting either the Bern Watts in White Gloss or the Bern Watts in Cyan Matte (refer to this site to see the two: http://www.bernunlimited.com/2008/watts.html ). I'm not sure which will look better with the jacket and pants i have. I have a burton ak 2l stagger jacket in electric blue http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2803666190_996dfed60a.jpg?v=0 and i have burton ak 2l cyclic pants in goldenseal http://store.christysports.com/var/items/large/AK-2L-Cyclic-Pant-Goldensea.jpg . Which would you guys pick?
