What would cause power lines to send out a shower of sparks then break in half?
Happened outside my house this morning. No car accident. No bad weather. No branch falling on them. The other wires on the utility pole are intact.
My stepdaughter saw it through her bedroom window - said loud noise woke her, she looked out window to see the world exploding (my sister across the street saw a shower of sparks from her window). Then, the power went out in our house (and, apparently, in the whole neighborhood).
When I went outside, the two upper wires strung between the utility poles were dangling down, broken in the middle. The other wires on the utility pole were just fine. The poles were standing up straight. No other damage anywhere that I could see.
Power surge? Weakened wire (on both wires at the same point)? Crazy squirrel stunt gone bad?
This happened in our neighborhood and it was a power surge. We all lost power though...

Uk:does a hosepipe ban indicate a failure of a water utilities obligations ?
Here we go again bit of sun and the hose pipe bans are starting to be enforced. BUT surely a water utility has an contract or duty of care or even an obligation to supply water whatever the weather?
So if the water company fails to deliver on its obligation can it legally enforce a hose pipe ban ?
surely a water companies job is to supply water - whatever that would include or need if it means multi million pound reservoirs then why don't they just build them ?
I don't buy the "unique climate factors" mentioned by 1 water industry spokesman. These WCs are making millions in profits.
My argument is that if someone is taken to court for using a hose pipe in a HPB area surely that person can/could argue that the WCs hasn't done its job properly and if it did a HPB wouldn't be necessary in the first place?
Water Company charges are set by Government ... which also controls the Planning process (and no NIMBY wants a new lake at the bottom of their garden).
Thus their ability (or otherwise) to deliver is ultimately controlled by the Government ..
NB. The last Governments answer to Water Co. complaints that 'water is too cheap for us to make enough money to invest' is met by the suggestion that they 'borrow more' .. needless to say, 'the market' is fully aware of the MASSIVE risk of political intervention here (Rail Track Mk 2 perhaps ??) ... so Water Companies operate on P/E ratios of about 8 ...
IF you want investors to spend billions on new Water infrastructure you have to show them how they will make a profit = otherwise they will put their funds into Windmills instead
