Wing Struts
Are my baby turkeys male or female??
I have two young bronze turkeys (5 weeks) and I am not sure if they are males or females, they are both the same color...both of them periodically puff up, drag their wings, and fan their tails at each other like they are strutting, suggesting to me that they are young toms, but do the females do that too? both are brown colored with white speckles, do they go through a molting before turning the colors of the bronze turkey? Help!
Sometimes young hens will strut though I have found this to be rather rare in occurrence.The only way to tell for sure what sex they are is time.Toms will have a well defined snood and wattles.So you know a snood is that little fleshy thing at the top of the beak right between their eyes.Some refer to it as their comb.Males also begin showing spur dots a little quicker then the females.Though young hens will sometimes strut there is one distinct thing that only a tom does and is perhaps the funniest way to determine just what they are.Toms will begin to gobble or make a good attempt to anywhere from 8 weeks old to 4 months old.Right now your birds have their adolescent plumage.These are just their temporary first feathers and will be replaced by their adult plumage by the time they are 4 to 6 months old.Turkeys will not molt till the following summer.The reason being there is no need because they are constantly changing and growing new feather.
