Is it true the more blades on an airplane propeller the quieter it is?

When I was a kid I LOVED the idea of flying GA and watched shows about it on TV all the time. On some PBS show during a fund drive the host asked about the number of blades and the panel explained about thrust and torque and all that, but before moving on one guy popped up saying in a kind of after thought way that a three blade propeller is quieter then a two blade propeller and everyone on the panel kind of agreed with him like it was something everyone knew. I can't find anything about this being true. Was he making a kind of inside joke and the panel went along with it? Also... if I were to buy Fly Baby and upgrade putting a 3 blade propeller on a Rotax 912 will it be both quite and faster?
