What Lakes in California Can One Land an Airplane On?
I was at the local airpark today where a lively debate was ensuing beside the liberal hot coffee dispenser, about what lakes in California permitted aircraft to land on their surface.
As is often the case in "Hangar Flying" none of the "Coffee Crowd" had any experience operating from water, nor were their craft equipped for such use, however they all maintained vigorous and varying opinions on the subject.
In aviation where safety is first and 2nd chances are seldom received, I endeavor to verify information from "paper pilots" in the "Coffee Crowd" who have little or no actual experience in a particular flight mode, but who may have briefly studied matters.
Surely, there must be some wise old pilots out there with plenty of experience; having the correct answer to this aviation conundrum? Thanks in advance for your help! 
Well, here we go. The FAA states you can land your airplane pretty much anywhere you want to that does not pose an immediate threat to persons or property on the ground or in your case on the water. However, local , city and county type laws may prohibit this. An example: if the city of houston would allow me, it is perfectly legal for me to land my plane on interstate 10, according to the FAA , however there is city laws against this. Same way with helicopters. Here is the simple rules on seaplanes, if you can safely land it in that body of water without endangering life or property it is legal. A plane becomes a vessel when the floats touch the water...therefore adhering to the right of way rules of boats until the floats leave the water.....hope this helps a little...
