Im 13.How do you make ruffles on your sleeves/cuffs for a soc.studies Project WITHOUT sewing?HELP SOON?

We have to be someone that made the decloration of independence and im Richard Basset We have to wear a white powdered wig and a dark button up jacket and we have to attach ruffles on to the cuff of the jacket and neck line and I dont want to sew.. My mom can help me but she is sleeping cuz she works nights at a hospital. My dad is not here cuz he is at work and my sis is sleeping...(shes almost 16)So I need ur help...It is due tuesday and i need to do it today so i can get it over with...by the way im in 8th grade..Thanks in advance..

A little bit of hand sewing will get you big rewards in this case... basting the ruffles on to the jacket by hand is quick and easy and won't come off or hurt the jacket.

So let's make you some circular ruffles for the cuffs and as a jabot (a scarf sort of thing) you can pin on the neckline of a shirt.

First, we need to find some non-raveling fabric. A knit is pretty good because it won't ravel, and we're not going to finish the edges. You could use woven fabric, but it will ravel on some edges -- if you're going that route, an old sheet should do.

Let's do the wrists first. Measure the inside of the jacket cuff all the way around. Just to give us some numbers here, I'm going to guess that the cuff measures 8" in circumference, and you want about 3" of ruffle.

We're going to cut a circle for each ruffle... but how big of a circle? We know we need the inside edge of the ruffle to measure at least 8", which is the circumference. The formula for circumfernce of a circle is C = pi D, so solving that equation,
8" = 3.14 x D
D= 8/3.14 = 2.54" That's the diameter, the distance across the circle. To draw the circle we need the radius, which is half the diameter, or 1.25" (roughly).

Get out your compass and a piece of newspaper and set the compass so the pencil point and the sharp point are 1 1/4" apart.
Draw a circle. Draw a second circle adding 3 1/2 to the first
measurement... so set the pencil point to 1 1/4+ 3 1/2 = 3 3/4".
Put the sharp point back in the center of your first circle, and draw the second circle. You now have your ruffle pattern.
Cut the center circle out of the pattern. Cut around the outside edge. Pin this pattern to 2 layers of fabric, and cut out your fabric "donuts". These are your ruffles. Yah, I know they don't look like much, but they'll look good when they're on the coat.

Now you're going to baste the ruffle to the inside of the coat sleeves -- you've got about 1/2" extra fabric to go inside the sleeve. That's done now.

Now we're going to tackle the jabot. It's also going to be based on a circle, and you can decide whether you want to make one or two after you make the first one.

Back to the compass... let's make you one about 1 ft long, and
5" wide.... that'll be a nice full look.

Set your compass points to 1 3/4" inches, and draw a circle. Add 5" to that, and draw the second circle at 6 3/4". Cut out your donut pattern again. One change this time: you're going to
cut a line across the donut, a radius of your circles.
Pin the pattern to your fabric and cut it out. The one thing you need to be careful of is that the radius line you cut across your
fabric donut should not run straight up and down or straight across on your fabric if you're using woven fabric. Instead, it should be at an angle to the threads of your fabric.

Cut out your donut. Pin one of the cut edges to the top of your
shirt band, and let the other end hang down the length of your
shirt band. The inside edge will become a straight line, and the outside edge automagically ruffles. Pin that bottom free end in place, too. If that's not "full" enough looking for you, cut a second one, and pin or baste that on, too.
