I have:
A 555 timer (soon to be 2)
A Thyristor
Three transistors
Switches
4 LEDs (Soon to be 10)
A diode
A variable resistor
Five Relays
A lot of resistors and capacitors of various values
Breadboard
Lots of wires

Soon: A 4017B decade counter

I also have a few quid loose to buy any cheap components... But nothing major!

Just putting together a bunch of components is a total waste of time. You need to know what the components do. Then you can practice estimating what will happen and then measuring what actually happened.

What can I use to substitute a 7490 decade counter ic chip?

The circuit is a variable pulse generator which uses a 555 timer, (3) 7490 decade counters, a 100K pot, a 4 pos switch, (2) 1K resistors, and a .01UF cap.

As I said the last time I answered this question, the 74LS90 is still in use.

As is the 7490. A 5 second search shows it for sale for 90 cents.

Instead of asking the same question over and over again, go to google and type in 7490 or 74LS90 and you find lots of information.

In case you don't know, the 74xxx family has been replaced by the 74LSxxx. Same function, lower power, faster, compatible.

74Sxxx and 74Hxxx are higher speed, higher speed versions. 74Cxxx is cmos version.
