Experimental Trade

Investing: What do you think of my strategy? Any advice?
I am 17, turning 18 this month. I am planning on opening my Roth IRA within a week or two of my birthday, depositing about $2000 of my own money. I have been researching the stock market in depth for several months, so I believe I am ready to pick good companies. I plan on investing 500 in three different ones, and leaving 500 to work on one short term trade at a time. The site has low commissions (4.95/trade) and no other fees, and again I have done much research, so I think I am capable. I wish to become a professional trader, so one studied trade at a time I believe will provide a good learning curve. After, I plan on investing 3,000 a year while in college, with 1,000 in each new company, as well as maybe adding one more short term $500 trade. I'll keep the Roth IRA at near depositing capacity, and open a more experimental private account at 21 if I'm a good trader. What do you think of my strategy, and can you provide me with any suggestions? Thanks!
You are ahead of the curve being this interested in trading; I hope you keep it up. I will address other well meaning comments first. DRIP plans were great when they were started, it gave regular people an inexpensive way to invest, now it is so cheap to invest that DRIPs are not the best way to go. The other thing is don’t worry about having earned income to contribute to an IRA. Just a little secret—the IRS does not care, they’ve got much bigger things to worry about than if an 18 y/o is opening an IRA without earned income. And your custodian isn’t going to ask you if you have earned income either….
Trading is a difficult thing to do with a small amount of money. You did a good job with your broker at 4.95 (I hope it is Trade King). But still, at 500 dollars, a round trip will cost you 2%. If you’ve made 25%, that’s ok, but it kills small gains and adds insult to injury with losses.
What I suggest isn’t as much fun as what you propose. Index with ETFs with all of your $, and keep building your account. Then READ. Read everything about investing and trading that you can. Or at least skim a lot of books. Trading in the Zone, Fooled by Randomness, Trend Following, The Little Book that Beats the Market, When Genius Failed are just a few that I would recommend (oh yeah, Hot Commodities, can’t leave commodities out). Reading will open your eyes as to what you really want to trade, and what kind of trader you are. And read a variety of investing books—not one discipline has the total answer.
Once you get an idea(s) while reading, paper trade it. Paper trading isn’t as fun as putting your real money on the line but it is a must, especially when you are starting out. It’ll probably be difficult for you to backtest, but it is amazing with what you can do with free data from Yahoo and excel. Disclaimer, backtesting is dangerous for the uninitiated.
Take all of the derivative classes you can in college. I cannot stress that enough. Do well enough in school that you can intern at a trading shop. If you can pull it off, major in physics or math—if not, don’t worry about it.
Something else I would recommend is to listen in to calls on mutual funds that really trade and are good at it, like Janus Long/Short, TFS Market Neutral and others. It is really interesting to hear how smart people handle different market conditions.
You’re going to change your mind a million times on what and how you want to do invest, and you’re going to make just as many mistakes. Just keep learning and don’t get discouraged. Don’t let people tell you that you cannot beat the market or come up with something new, because you can.
I’ve literally traded billions in both equities and derivatives, in other words, I am not talking about stuff I don’t know about. Good Luck!

Experimental Pragmatics $175.08 How does our knowledge of the language on the one hand, and of the context on the other, permit us to understand what we are told, to resolve ambiguities, to grasp both explicit and implicit content, to appreciate metaphor and irony? These issues have been studied in two disciplines: linguistic pragmatics and psycholinguistics, with only limited interactions between the two. This volume lays down the foundation for a new field: Experimental Pragmatics. Contributions review pioneering work and present novel ways of articulating theories and experimental methods in the area. Author: Noveck, Ira A./ Sperber, Daniel/ Noveck, Ira A. Series Title: Palgrave Studies in Pragmatics, Language, and Cognition Binding Type: Hardcover Number of Pages: 320 Publication Date: 2005/01/15 Language: English Dimensions: 8.74 x 5.70 x 0.98 inches |

Experimental Psychology $103.49 Focusing on experimental methods, authors Anne Myers and Christine Hansen lead students step by step through the entire research process, from generating testable hypotheses to writing the research report. The major sections of the book parallel the major sections of a research report (Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion), giving students the skills they'll need to design and conduct an experiment, analyze and interpret the research findings, and report those findings. Although the main focus is on experimentation, alternative approaches are discussed as important complements. |

Experimental Evolution $79.66 In evolutionary and experimental biology, the field of experimental evolution is concerned with testing hypotheses and theories of evolution by use of controlled experiments. Evolution may be observed in the laboratory as populations adapt to new environmental conditions and/or change by such stochastic processes as random genetic drift. With modern molecular tools, it is possible to pinpoint the mutations that selection acts upon, what brought about the adaptations, and to find out how exactly these mutations work. Because of the large number of generations required for adaptation to occur, evolution experiments are typically carried out with microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast or viruses. However, laboratory studies with rodents have shown that notable adaptations can occur within as few as 1020 generations and experiments with wild guppies have observed adaptations within comparable numbers of generations. 9/11 Experimental Video - DAY IN REVERSE
neice wants to trade husband for a lesbian freind. She has 3 kids. do I convince her of this mistake?
She is unhappy with her husband of 9 years and the lesbian friend is younger and in my opinion needy. They laugh and play like girlfreinds do, but recently have slept together and she told her husband of this situation. He is devasted to be made a mockery of and wonders how it will effect the children and needs advice on what he has rights too. I told him maybe this is just experimental with her and she will be back home soon, but he thinks he is gonna loose them all. Does he need to retain a lawyer of this adultery, is it adultery, if its the same sexx? They are legally married. I think its a huge mistake for her to do this to them all and not think of the way it will effect the children. Even tho the "lesbian girlfriend" is the man partner and works like one and provides, makes me think that my neice is feeling like she needs that support that her husband is falling short of. SHe has stopped counceling with him. for her, and he is trying to save his marriage. anyone have an opinion?
Hi. I think you are a wonderful aunt if you really care about them. (^_^) I think yes he could take this to the court if he so wishes since the wife is *keeping a girlfriend* , which would be seen as *adultery*. The thing is, perhaps only now the niece of yours realises that she is bi-sexual. In any case, I think both the niece and her husband should focus on THEIR marriage FIRST, rather than convoluting it with another woman blah blah. Your NIECE needs help, and so does her husband. God bless.
