What is the most powerful American muscle car engine for the 60's & 70's ?

I know people add stuff to their engines to make them super sports but without all the additives what was the most powerful engine in them 20 years ? ( No International Sports cars included ) American Muscle only and street legal.

On paper, it's the 1970 Chevelle SS454 with the LS6 motor, rated at 450 horsepower. They made more than 4,000 of them.

Otherwise, I would have to suggest the Chevy L88 and ZL1 427s. The former was installed in Corvettes from 1967-69, while the latter were installed in the Corvette and Camaro in 1969-only. They were rated at 430 hp on paper, but they put out more; some sources quote 560-hp, but I believe that was with open exhausts. (Just to clarify, the ZL1 was basically an L88 with an aluminum block.)

While the 426 Hemi was the engine to which all others were compared, it really didn't have the "racing engine wrapped up with street exhausts" the way the 427s above were - the Hemi was more of a detuned racing engine. And what about the Race Hemi? Well, the name says it all, eh?

Should I buy a classic muscle car if I cant work on it?

What I mean is that Ive always though that old muscle cars like mustang fast backs and 69 camaro ss, were just amazing. I cant even change my own oil to be completley honest so would it be dumb for me to buy a car like that ( one thats already completley redone ) ? And how would I go about learning about cars and engine.. etc. anyways. ?

sure go for it. i started out in high school with my 2 57 chevies. Join a local car club. they will be happy to assist you and if you ever need more info there are a ton of books and net sites to help you. if you wanna learn you gotta start somewhere.
