Aerospace: both insects & birds fly with wings, how come flight is possible with such different wing shapes?


We may believe the areofoil is the most efficient wing shape (similar to a bird's wing or dolphin's fluke), but insect wings are flat in cross-section; how come they can achieve powered flight? A folded paper airplane and a hang glider also have a flat wing cross-section but we don't see many powered aircraft with this wing design: if butterflies can do it, why can't we?
I've seen microlight aircraft with flat fabric wings similar to a hang glider which suggests conventional powered flight is possible without the airfoil cross-section: is it mearly a question of simplicity versus lift?

You say the "areofoil" (I'm assuming you mean airfoil) is the most efficient shape but airfoil encompasses hundreds of different wing shapes and that only account for the shape of the wing not for planform area or any other parameters. The shape and size of a wing have to change based on the intended use of the wing. The speed at which it will fly, the wieght of the object they will be supporting, how they provide lift. Insects and birds wings provide lift through "flapping" wings on an airplane don't do that and, therefore, can't use the same shape. Insects and birds also require very little lift due to the fact that they weigh almost nothing, whereas airplanes are heavy and require lift orders of magnitude higher than birds an insects, you're comparing apples to oranges here.
