Radial Aircraft

Quiz: What aircraft(s) has two different types of engines?
I'm not talking about having a two radial engines from two different manufacturers, but an aircraft with BOTH Radial Engines and Turbojets. I'm also not counting rockets for takeoff. So what aircraft(s) has both radial engines and turbojets? I can think of at least two.
P2V-7 Neptune and C-123 Provider had two radials and two jets mounted under the wing.

One model of the C-119 Flying Boxcar had a two radials and a single turbojet mounted above and behind the flight deck.

Later models of the B-36 (-D model and later) had six radials and four jets

The North American AJ Savage had two radials and one jet installed in the fuselage

Radial Engine $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The radial engine is a reciprocating type internal combustion engine configuration in which the cylinders point outward from a central crankshaft like the spokes on a wheel. This configuration was very commonly used in large aircraft engines before most large aircraft started using turbine engines. Radial engines of 100 to 165 hp were popular during the 1930s, before the introduction of moderntype opposedcylinder engines. In a radial engine, the pistons are connected to the crankshaft with a masterandarticulatingrod assembly. One piston, the uppermost one in the animation, has a master rod with a direct attachment to the crankshaft. The remaining pistons pin their connecting rods attachments to rings around the edge of the master rod. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. In October 1927 the company changed name to the Warner Aircraft Corporation. The Scarab Junior was introduced in 1930, during 1933 a larger engine the Super Scarab was designed and built. The company did not produce any more engine models and was taken over by the Clinton Machine Company in 1950. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Toys and Models AB36 Peacemaker Aircraft $259.94 Six pusher radial engines mounted on the trailing edge of the wings powered this big longrange SAC bomber. The D burn and turn model was boosted by a pair of turbojet pods under the outer wings. A strategic bomb built by Convair for the United States Air Force. The Convair B36 Peacemaker is said to be the very first bomber that had intercontinental range and was also the first thermonuclear weapon delivery vehicle. The Peacemaker was the largest combat aircraft ever built. Its 230 foot wingspan is almost fifty percent longer than that of the huge B52 that replaced it. The B36 was one of Americas major deterrents to violence by a prospective adversary for eight years. From 1948 to 1958 the B36 became part of the USAF Strategic Air Command. Major General Henry Arnold described the B36 as the plane that could fly the skin off any rivals. The Peacemaker was also the first Cold War Bomber. Unlike any other aircraft that were seen in wars dropping bombs or firing an enemy the B36 was never seen in any of these actions. Instead the Peacemaker was closest seen during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the Suez Crisis where it was dispatched to Turkey and Morocco. Thus the Peacemaker is famous for never having fired a shot in anger and the plane that kept peace for ten long years. The B36 Peacemaker was also involved in two aircraft collapse incidents one was last February 13 1950 in an unpopulated region of British Columbia and it was the first loss of an American Nuclear Weapon. The other one was on May 22 1957 when a B36 accidentally dropped a bomb on a deserted area while landing at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. A total of 388 B36 Peacemakers were produced. The last one was built on August 1954. Then on June 29 1955 the first B52 was delivered to SAC. All Peacemaker models were delivered and converted to J models on which two jet engines were added to each wing. The last B36 Peacemaker made its final flight in 1959. |

Toys and Models ACFF1TE G5/FF1 Fifi Aircraft $311.94 The G5/FF1 Fifi is a naval fighter aircraft manufactured by Grumman and was designed by Leroy Grumman. The primary users and operators of the FF1 are the United States NAvy Spanish Republican Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. In June 1933 FF1s were delivered to Fighter Squadron VF5B of the USS Lexington. In service the FF1 became known as Fifi. FF1 together with the SF1 were withdrawn from firstline US Navy squadrons by the end of 1936 and reallocated to reserve units. In the late 1940 most of the FF1s are still in service. The FF1 has a crew of 1. It has a maximum speed of 207 mph and a range of 685 mi. Armament includes 2 .30 M1919 Browning machine guns and a 100 lb bomb. It incorporates a Wright R182078 Cyclone radial engine. There are 120 FF1s built. |

Radial Engines uses in new planes?
Hi, somebody could tell me about of advantages and disadvantages of radial engines??? Are more stronger??? Why the new aircraft don't use these engines??? Only in old aircrafts are found that I know.
Advantages to radials they are a little lighter because the crankshaft is shorter and all cylinders are cooled evenly. Disadvantages are they have a much bigger profile and create more drag, and oil tends to pool in the bottom cylinders. It must be drained before starting, otherwise you will bend or break the connecting rod.
They are not used on modern airplanes; they became obsolete when the jet engine was invented. Radial engines were more effective on bigger airplanes because you could put a lot of cylinders into a very small space and create a lot of power with a relatively small engine. However, the jet engine is much more efficient and powerful than any radial engine.
