Reference Handbook

Little Brown Handbook (does edition matter?)?

Signing up for an English course and The Little Brown Handbook is required. The campus bookstore lists the 10th (newest) edition for this class. But since this book is basically the same every year, does it matter if it is another, earlier edition? It would make quite a difference in the price I pay. A earlier edition (like 7th) could be bought cheaply off a website that sells used books.

If most teachers just have it listed so that a student will have a reference book for writing and don't refer to exact pages, does it matter?

I have taught college writing classes off and on for 30 years.
In all honesty, the edition probably doesn't matter unless the class is something like the basic composition class where the instructor may assign specific sections to be read. Even there, some material won't change (grammar is grammar).

That said, however, the more recent the edition you get, the better you will be. The handbooks update to reflect changes in such things as APA and MLA format. You can get info on those things online, but not always with the degree of detail you need.

If you live near a college, check the local public libraries and their book sales. You might pick up an old Little Brown for under a buck.

My employer knows I am seeing a coworker (no reporting conflict). Must I tell them if we get married?

This is a private company and there is no reference to this rule in the handbook. Was thinking that there might be a state law that says this must be disclosed. We would rather not tell them at work just to not draw attention to us and we just want to be treated the same as we already are.

Why would you not want to disclose i.e. does your employer offer life insurance - who is your beneficiary? Do you have a 401(k) plan - who is your beneficiary (in some states it must be the spouse unless the spouse signs a form agreeing to designate another beneficiary). Do you have health insurance - does she? Is it not cheaper to have both on one plan rather than two - more importantly would your employer allow that?

Who is your emergency contact information - should it not be your wife if you marry?
