Electronics semiconductors, Need help choosing!?

I am currently trying to repair the church organ and have traced the problem down to a gating and dividing board not functioning. I have replaced the majority of the components and have now got it producing half of the full note. My next quest is to replace the binary counting chip. The problem i am having is that the chip is a CD4024BCN and i cant seem to locate any within the UK. Would it be okay to replace this with a CD4024BE as the specs seem similar enough to me.

Parts are interchangeable, as indicated by the CD4024B part number.

The Fairchild part suffix was originally CN, where C meant commercial temp range, and N means plastic DIP package. Since the temp range on this part is not the standard commercial temp range, they changed it by just adding the C to the part number, and leaving the N suffix for package. The TI part uses E for the plastic DIP, does not explicitly indicate the temp range.

I doubt the counter is your problem. There are two kinds of failures: functional and parametric.

Functional failure is when the part doesn't work at all. Easier to find.

Parametric failures are when the counter still functions, but it no longer meets specs. For example, maybe the output is weak and cannot drive a heavy load properly. Or an input leaks too much current, or has a voltage shift that requires higher voltage to make it actuate.

Your problem seems to be that your bit stream is off by a factor of two. If this is consistent, probably a functional failure, rather than parametric.

Chip Function:
Since you have replaced many components, looks like you are doing more part replacement than troubleshooting.

Usually, only one component fails. Perhaps one of the parts you replaced is also bad. If you don't have the schematic, you should try to make one and trace out the circuit function.

I would check chip function by looking at inputs on logic analyzer or oscope before replacing chip. Even counter might be able to do it.

This chip has only two inputs. There are two basic ways to use the chip. One is a simple free running divider. It just runs, and the outputs are used to divide by the correct factor. The other way uses pin 2 to reset the counter to zero, allowing more divisor numbers to be used. When pin 2 is high, resets counter to zero. So, check input 2 to see if it cycles. If not, then simple to check pin 1 (clock input) versus divider. Pin 1 increments the counter on the negative transition.

Most likely, your circuit is using pin 2, and it is triggering at the wrong time. But check it before replacing the chip.

BTW, it's much easier if you have a mate to help. If you are a tech, try to get an engineer to help. If an engineer, get a tech, as the skills tend to be complementary.
