eRC's J-5 Cub Trainer Airplane
Is a model airplane a good hobby???.?
I had a friend just chat with me on facebook about selling me a cessna trainer gas powered model airplane. As someone who is new to this would this be a good deal. He said he will sell one for 250 dollars. I have a park across from my house to launch it from when the weather breaks.
I bought a P40 trainer, engine, servos, radio, and receiver, also another profile acrobatic plane without equipment for $400 about 5 yrs ago. For $250 it had at least come with the engine, servos, and receiver. You'll probably need another $100/$200 for a radio. A good radio can be used for 10 different models at the same time. As far as flying it, I recommend you search for a local r/c airfield and get someone experienced to help you setup the plane and assist you on your first flights before trying to go solo. You don't want to crash your plane on the first flight and be out $250. You'll also need a glo-plug batter to start the plane, quick charger that you can charge your plane with from your car battery, gallon of 10%/15% nitro fuel. I really like the hobby myself. I switched over to electric planes in recent times because I don't like messing with fuel and mixture settings. You might want to consider buying a r/c simulator from you local hobby shop to get some good experience too between flights, that will run you around $200. Good luck with the hobby.
I don't want to scare you off, but there is a lot of upfront costs associated with the hobby, but most, if not all the products, can be used on other models. The average model - engine, servos, receiver - will run about $400 a pop.

It was tough to judge the CG but the plane was definitely yanked into the air too soon. It had insufficient airspeed and was stalling out as soon as it left the ground. If your Dad has flown for 6 years he would know that he made a mistake that all of us make. It's not a condemnation – just a fact.
