Can things burn in space without oxygen?

Can things in space burn without oxygen? Would the temperatures have to be drastically different to make up for the lack of atmosphere and near vacuum and temperature drain?

yes and no - not what you think of as burn - but you might want to take a look at the big yellow thing in the sky - no oxygen there but it sure supports combustion ( of a type - but if you get near it will burn you ) lol

seriously though - fire only requires two things - fuel and an oxidizer ( note the word oxidizer is a material that CONTAINS oxygen not oxygen itself ) so if you put these two together at the proper temperature and ratio you have fire ( forget the cold of space since the reaction itself can raise the temperature)

so the answer is a qualified YES

How can I install an alarm that will only go off during a blackout?

I have a UPS, but typical blackouts outlast the power stored in it. I would like to know when it is working (I do not have easy access to it), so that I can turn off things that would drain the battery unnecessarily, like a microwave, coffeepot, vacuum cleaner, etc.
I guess it should not be too hard, but my knowledge of electricity is quite low.

I guess the same principle would also work for a light. Any pointers?

You would need a "normally closed" relay attached to a bell of some kind. Most relays are "normally open" and only close when they are powered. A "normally closed" circuit is open when powered and closes when the power goes off. I would guess that you may have to use a 120V AC to 12V DC step down transformer to do this, but it would be possible. Check at Radio Shack or a good electronics store.
