what history do they teach in american public schools?
My cousins have told me that they teach mainly Black History - books on Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Slavery, etc.
Books on WWI and WWII are not common, the civil war is mainly looked over (beyond the part about abolishment of slavery), and most of the stories of the founding fathers are not present.
I think it is dangerous to be teaching such a narrow historical persepective - not that i'm saying Black history is not important American history, but there is so many other important things we must learn and focus in on, particularly the founding fathers and ideas of America.
what do they teach to your kids?
Generally American History is taught first then Western Civilization.
I don't know what kind of school your cousin is going to, but they usually only focus on black history as a portion of the overall American history lesson plan.
Could it be that he is just in a grade level that is focusing on black history right now and will move on to other historical learning at a latter point?

I'm sure that it says something good about our charactor when we name streets after a leaders. But what does it say when we remove the name of a WWI Medal of Honor hero and replace it with a civil rights leader?
These weak sisters of civil rights! I hope I live to see it go away.
