I am a first year engineering student who is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering (because my school doesn't offer aerospace engineering). I was wondering if such a degree will improve my chances of becoming a fighter pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force. I have no experience with the forces, will that have a big impact on my future with them? Should I try to get some experience over the next few years to help my chances.
I was wondering how I would go about applying for such a position in the future. After getting my B.Eng, and applying for the air force would they take care of all of the flight training or should I get some experience prior to applying. My ultimate goal is to work for the Canadian Space Agency as an astronaut. Reading many of their biographies, they have been fighter pilots and engineers before.
Any other useful information would be appreciated. Looking for advice from experienced RCAF pilots
First off there hasn't been a RCAF since 1967 when the three forces unified into one service the Canadian Forces. In the CF the Air Command is responsible for all aspects of flight.
Other than that you are on the right track for career as a pilot. A pilot can have any degree but an engineering degree in either mech or aero engineering is preferred. As for prior experience it is not a problem, most people who join don't have an experience either.
To apply go to your local recruiting center, they should be able to answer all your questions. You should also visit forces.ca for more information. Be aware that a lot more people apply for pilot than there are room for so the compilation is tough. Study hard for aircrew selection and you stand a good chance. As for getting a pilot's license it isn't necessary but it defiantly wouldn't hurt. The CF will provide all the training you need.

I have a 1986 Iroc-z and ive done quite a bit of work on it, and have gotten it from running at 220ºf to about180-190ºf. Do you think if i replaced the manifold gaskets that would help put down the temp. theres not much else that can fix it that i know of.. i put new oil... new flange downpipe donut gaskets, new coolant new thermostat, might need a new radiator, sprayed a carb choke and clean spray into it while i had it on, put it carb and fuel inj. treatment in the tank, hooked up the fan behind the radiator (which rus super fast), put up the air damn.... i have the carbed 350 5.7L and im thinking maybe its just supposed to run that hot. thanks for all help
replacing the manifold gaskets isn't going to do anything unless you have a severe coolant leak at the intake, assuming you mean intake manifold and not exhaust manifold. 180-190 is LOW. engines LIKE to be run hot (within acceptable limits) since they perform most efficiently. i'd leave it alone, run it tool cool and you are going to eat more gas than you already do.
