Aero-TV: Diamond Aircraft Details The DA50!
For piston aircraft, is it typical for a Vno speed to be LOWER than the 75% power cruise speed?
I've been looking at Diamond AFM's, and the Vno speeds for both the DA-20 and the DA-40 are significantly lower than the advertised 75% power cruise speeds. Is this typical? Do owners typically fly faster than Vno and then slow down (belatedly) if they encounter unexpected turbulence?
Maybe for the newer 'slipery' planes like the Diamonds, Columbias (Cessna now), and Cirruses. But most planes are solidly in the green during cruise (some even in the white arc like the battered 172 I did most of my training in).
Vno is usually above Va which is the recommended airspeed for turbulent air penetration, since the wing will stall before it breaks. The plane will still break at speeds above Va and below Vno. Speeds above Vno are normally reserved for very smooth air only.
If these planes can cruise above Vno, then they aren't built well enough. Don't find out the hard way.
