Help with Tesla Coil math formulas please?

I already have the Tesla Coil. I want to measure the inductance of the secondary coil. Can I do that without using my Fluke LCR Meter? I have also an volt/ohm meter from Radio Shack. I think there's some math formulas I remember from elctronics classes where you can find other ways around using the LCR meter. If you can't do it one way, you can do it another?

What is your operating frequency? Because I have an idea, and you will need the components and meters described below. Choose a frequency which is at that operating frequency.

Have a collection of resistors ready. You can get lots of them in variety kits at the same place you mentioned, Radio Shack.

Is that other meter an AC voltmeter? You will need one.

Now apply about 10 VAC or so across a resistor and the coil in series.

The AC voltmeter will measure the voltage across the resistor. Then do the inductor.

This is trial and error, adjust or change the resistor value until the two voltages are equal.

The formula you are probably thinking about is:

XL = R = 2 π f L

XL is inductive reactance
R is the resistance
f is frequency
L is inductance
π of course is pi

2 π f L = R

Solve for L by dividing both sides by 2 π f:

(2 π f L)/(2 π f) = R/(2 π f)

This becomes:

L = R/2πf

What's The Difference Between A Tesla Coil And An Ordinary Transformer? - How To Create Free Energy To Power Your Home

I just got a mini-lecture from my high-school physics teacher about Tesla Coil and air-cored resonant transformer. But I just can't understand what he says...I only understand the ordinary step-up or step-down transformer. So, can anyone make it clear...what's the difference between a Tesla coil and an ordinary transformer?

NB: Do not use "extravagant" or "high-level" words...because my vocabulary is not that good, use "everyday" English if you can... An ordinary air core transformer has a pair of interwoven coils and when a changing current is forced in one of the pair another current is created in the other coil because the first makes a changing magnetic field which always makes a changing current in any wires in the field. The currents are tightly coupled, meaning one increases or decreases closely with the other.

A Tesla coil circuit plays games with the coils by adding capacitors and operating at high frequency with the result that the voltage in the second set of coils is much higher than is created by the ratio of the number of coils (and the current much lower.) This very high voltage shows as sparks.

One sloppy analogy might be that if you push a baby in a small baby swing you normally have to keep your hands on the seat and keep pushing or it stops pretty quickly. But if you are on an outside swing, you can give a push at just the right moment and speed and get the swing higher and higher. The Tesla coil uses a capacitor with the coils to give that kick at just the right time to boost the voltage.

Okay, if the transformer outside my home did the things a Tesla Coil does, life would certainly be more interesting. You simply must look up Tesla Coils on You Tube. There's nothing like it. This lightning looking freaky deaky electricity from Satan comes out the top and demonicaly latches on to whatever is nearby. Looks dangerous. Then you will find You Tubes of people letting the Tesla Coil pet them like they are a little kitty. It's wild.

When defining a class of wood, what does "Wood Class II (15-25y)" Represent?

What does the "y" represent? And the numbers?
Please help, I'm doing some materials research for the structures portion of my Aeronautical Engineering senior design project and we are selecting materials to contruct our R/C Aircraft.

I would (ha!) think that the y is Years and the numbers are the numbers of years.
Any wood that is more than 25 years old - growth age, not just lying around - is Class I etc.
In order to get the best quality and best wood you need the tree to be of some age. Younger trees are often very fast growing which means that the wood is softer and spongier. Older wood has more even growth and more consistent properties for use as a construction material.

Lasik and branching Aviation ?

I am getting my packet together for OCS(college Op), and I really want to branch Aviation, but I don't want to be a Warrant Officer. So the rules say that you have to take the AFAST and have a flight physical before you get to OCS so they can have time to review the application. With all that being said, I wear contacts and i know that there are some big rules pertaining to vision requirements for pilots. Now, I know the Army will pay to have the lasik procedure done, but I have to be in the army for them to do it. Now this is the sticky part; If I go in with bad vision with out getting lasik before hand I will have to branch something else(Right?) But if I get the lasik by a civilian doctor there is like a really long waiting period before I can be let in. So it seems like I am screwed either way. Please let me know if I have all this iformation correct or if I am wrong.
