Need help in physics please!!?

1) Some gliders are launched from the ground by means of a winch, which rapidly reels in a towing cable attached to the glider. What average power must the winch supply in order to accelerate a 179-kg ultralight glider from rest to 28.1 m/s over a horizontal distance of 47.9 m? Assume that friction and air resistance are negligible, and that the tension in the winch cable is constant.

2) A projectile of mass 0.923 kg is shot straight up with an initial speed of 21.9 m/s. (a) How high would it go if there were no air resistance? (b) If the projectile rises to a maximum height of only 7.84 m, determine the magnitude of the average force due to air resistance.

Can anyone please help me please!! Thank you in advance please!!

1)
P = W/t = (F*d)/t = (m*a*d)/t
then
d=1/2 a t^2, so t=sqrt(2d/a)
and Vf^2 = Vi^2 + 2 a d and Vi=0
so a= Vf^2/(2d)
subbing
P = (m*a*d)/t = (m*(Vf^2/(2d))*d)/(sqrt(2d/(Vf^2/(2d))
simplifying
P = m*Vf^3 / (4d) = 179(28.1^3) / (4*47.9) = 20729 watts
this is roughly 28 HP which seems reasonable

2)
a) KE bottom = GPE top
1/2 m v^2 = m g h
m's cancel
1/2 v^2 = g h
1/2(21.9^2) = 9.81(h)
h = 24.4 m

b) initial KE = final GPE + Work against friction
1/2 m v^2 = m g h + F*h
1/2(0.923)(21.9^2) = 0.923(9.81)(7.84) + F(7.84)
solve for F
I get about 19.2 N

Germanys AERO 2011 Friedrichshafen: A Show Of Economic Confidence

Comfortably established as the largest general aviation (GA) show in Europe, Germanys AERO 2011 held at Friedrichshafen, really had something for everyone this year, ranging from the latest gliders, ultralight and motorized aircraft up to the latest in business jets.

Special exhibits included innovative electric-powered aircraft and helicopters, while the Berblinger Flight Competition and a Comprehensive conference programme maintained their usual high standard. With some 630 exhibitors from 29 countries and an improving economic outlook, customers are returning.

An interesting sign was the number of North American aircraft, engine or accessory manufacturers exhibiting, together with companies from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Australia, Brazil and Russia. Attendance was finally counted as some 33400 people, 70% of the trade visitors being licensed pilots.

The show demonstrated an optimistic future for light and ultra-light aircraft, as well for electric motors and diesel engines, while developments in advanced composite materials and fuel cell technologies for smaller and larger aircraft are now gaining ground. It would seem that electric motors are now being increasingly adopted for gliders.

There was even an altruistic element that recalled some of the great names of aviation history. Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. and Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Prize (LEAP) organization representatives announced a joint initiative that continues the historic relationship between the Sikorsky and Lindbergh namesakes.

Sergei Sikorsky ,son of company founder Igo Sikorsky ,was among the representatives of aviations "first families" participating in promotional events to benefit Erik Lindbergh's non-profit group, LEAP. Other participants include members of the Wright, Zeppelin, Piccard, and Dornier families.

Erik Lindbergh, grandson of aviation pioneer, Charles Lindbergh, founded LEAP to promote solutions to social, technical and environmental challenges through prize philanthropy and education. LEAP awards the Lindbergh Electric Aircraft prize to recognize those who are leading advances in electric aircraft technology.

Sikorsky had the opportunity to promote the advanced technology research currently taking place within Sikorsky Innovations. This includes the Firefly all-electric helicopters, introduced in July 2010. The Firefly demonstrator is an S-300C helicopter equipped with a high-efficiency, 190-horsepower electric motor, digital motor controller, battery system and cockpit controls.

In cooperation with Deutschland AGs Piper Germany, Pipers dealer in Germany, the company introduced for the first time at the show, Garmin-equipped Meridian, Seneca and Archer aircraft.

Piper Aircraft Inc. has named European Aircraft Sales APs, Denmark, as the company's new aircraft sales representative for the Baltic and Scandinavian regions.

Italy-based Black shape has launched its new factory and production facilities in Monopoli, Italy, where it is beginning production of its new "Prime" carbon fibre, low-wing, two tandem seats, and ultra light aircraft. Black shape recognized that the carbon fibre UL segment was plagued with lots of good intentions, yet little conviction, with stagnation and prototypes that never made it off the ground.

Black shape decides that this could be changed and that a carbon fibre ultra light aircraft could be commercially produced. The Prime conforms to FAR 25 regulations, including auto-extinguishing carbon fibre and interiors, a four-spar cockpit and wing core, consisting of double pass through carbon fibre longerons, an internal ballistic parachute and an advanced diagnostics module.

In early April, Blackshape met with "interested "Greek parties to discuss the development of basic training aircraft for use in military training. Due to its performance, carbon fibre construction and emphasis on safety and cockpit construction, the Black shape Prime is particularly adapted to the needs of a military trainer. The discussions are to be followed by a tour of the Greek islands where the Black shape Prime will be presented to both civil and military pilots.

Piaggio Aero showed its P180 Avant 11 is said to be the only aircraft with the performances of a jet and the economics of a turboprop. This is based on fuel efficiency, lowering operating costs without sacrificing performance or environmental responsibility, less fuel burn means lower carbon emissions.

Simulator manufacturer and exhibitor, Mechtronix Systems Inc., an MWC company, announced that Lufthansa Flight Training (LFT) had placed an order for a new flight simulation training devices (FSTD) Simulator for installation at its Bremen facility, in Northern Germany. The simulator is configured as a Cessna Citation CJ1+ and is the sixth unit, acquired by the German pilot school in the past three years.

Like the five earlier supplied FSTDs, it will be used to train Lufthansa's cadet pilots during the initial phase of their curriculum. The unit will be ready for operational use in December and will be ready for operational use in December and will be evaluated by the German aviation authorities, LBA, to obtain dual qualification JAR FSTD A FNPT 11 MCC and FNPT 11.

The Cessna CJ1+ FSTD provides exceptional visual fidelity through a high standard RSI image generator and a 220 degree by 40 degree wide field of view. It comes with a suite of specific airport database for optimum realism during training. Featuring a Collins Proline 21 suite, the platform is also equipped with advanced avionics such as EGPWS and weather radar, enabling LFTs pilot students to benefit from state-of –the –art technology for the initial part of their training curriculum.

Indigenous manufacturer, Diamond Simulation, is a business unit of Diamond Aircraft Industries (DAI), Austria, and has its headquarters in Germany. Since 2005, the product line has been subject to constant further development, thus being technologically state of the art, allowing up to 100 hours simulator time to be set off against required flight hours in pilot training.

The product portfolio has been further extended by the DSIM DA40/42 convertible simulator that can be modified from single (DA40) to multi-engine (DA42) configuration, in a few easy steps. The device fully conforms to the worldwide qualification requirements for both training variants.

The manufacture of the first customer devices was completed by the end of April. These FSTDs fulfill the strict FAA rules for approval as FTD Level 6 (ACCORDING TO 14 CFR Part 60) and allow a greater share of the training to be flown on the simulator.

Apart from economic benefits, this means more safety and autonomy for training organizations.

Diamond Simulation is focused only on Diamond aircraft, namely: DA40 and DA42, both in diesel and avgas engine configuration.

Avionics

Avionics was much to the fore at AERO 2011 and Avidyne Corporation announced that its EX600 multi-function display (MFD) had received European Technical Standard Order (ETSO) approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency(EASA) .this ETSO paves the way for installation of the EX600 MFD in European-registered fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

Avidynes EX600 is a full –function MFD that is designed to enhance situational awareness and safety for pilots of general aviation aircraft and helicopters. Incorporating a 5, 8-inch diagonal, 640by 480 pixel display, the EX600 features Avidynes easy-to-use, pilot interface. With its new map panning keys and Quick pan function, the EX600 improves a pilot's ability to access and display critical flight data.

Quick pan allows the pilot to quickly toggle between the present position and a panned-to position, such as destination airport, with a single button push.

All EX600s include the ability to display CMax electronic approach charts and over 6000 worldwide airport diagrams at no additional charge, as well as support for European VFR Charts (aka Bottlang Airfield Manual), covering over 2200 airports in 29 European countries.

CMax Charts provide an added measure of situational awareness during critical phases of flight and while taxiing, both domestically and internationally.

GA Innovation

Innovation in general aviation has often been inhibited by lack of suitable technology, [particularly small jet engines. This is a problem that has now been addressed by French manufacturer Price Induction SA, with the introduced the DGEN 380, a high bypass ratio turbofan engine optimized for the lighter sector of aviation and its pilots.

The DGEN 380 allows the design of aircraft that can cruise up to 240 knots with an optimal consumption rate at altitudes between 10000 and 15000 feet.

It features an "all electric" concept with integrate FADEC, low vibration level and low noise signature. It is particularly applicable to PLJ (Personal Light Jet) development.

The DGEN 380 represents the first member of high bypass ratio engines with a thrust capability varying from 2.5KN to 4Kn. The DGEN 390, with 3KN OF THRUST (flat rating ISA+10),is the natural evolution of theDGEN 380  and will be developed concurrently.

Price Induction SA is based in the Aquitaine region, France, in Anglet (offices) and Tarnos (test bench) .Today, the company counts more than forty employees, more than 30 of which are engineers. The company recently opened two subsidiaries, one in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and one in Sao Jose dos Campos SP Brasil.

What kind of super powers can we make? With todays technology?

And don't just say jet pack or laser pistol, I mean things that are real, now. We have all seen the "pick the super power you'd most like to have" questions. This is a "What kind of super powers DO we have?" Doesn't have to be implanted. Examples: flight with hang glider. Ranged kinetic energy attack with gun. Night vision with goggles. Come up with some nobody's thought of!
I'd like to say thinks to everybody who responded, especially jackal, monday, wolfgame, drawmaster and flaca. Your ideas are interesting and thought provoking!

Invisibility... Well, it's not literal. But the Army is developing a suit that gives the effect of invisibility. It was inspired by the Predator movies. Basically, there are tiny cameras all over the suit and they project what's on one side to the other. So you look all blurry and almmost invisible, just like the Predator!!! Also, they're developing a pantsuit that walks and runs for you so you don't have to keep stopping when you become tired or exhausted... so that's like a form of... keep on goingness power? I don't know, but I think both are pretty cool!!!

Norfolk Powered Hang Glider Part 1 (Wing Cam)

Glider Thrill Rides

Here is a round-up of all the more exciting things you can ask for when going for a passenger ride in a glider. These ideas for thrill rides have been dredged up from many memories of my years as a gliding instructor. I realized my passengers and students had experienced a range of interesting little escapades. Particularly teenager passengers, they are usually game for a thrill ride of some kind!

Now I guess most of you reading this article have not actually taken a ride in a glider, or sailplane as they are sometimes called. These are the full-size planes I'm talking about, not hang-gliders! Gliding clubs are dotted across many countries, particularly in Europe, the U.S., Australia and South Africa. It's easy to contact a club and simply turn up on the weekend for a passenger flight. I won't go into prices since this varies a lot from country to country and even club to club. But the cost is very reasonable in most cases, for a 10 or 20 minute flight. Longer flights are possible if weather conditions are suitable.

Winch Launches

If you can, try to get a flight at a gliding club which uses winch-launching. Yes, gliders are actually winched into the sky on the end of a long cable. The winch is powered by a powerful motor, often a V8, and it pulls the glider up like a giant kite. Sometimes the cable breaks, but this is quite routine and simply results in a short flight and a bit of inconvenience for the ground crew! Come to think of it, this situation could be considered a thrill ride for an unsuspecting passenger! Firstly, the jolt when the wire snaps. Secondly, the fairly sudden nose-down movement of the glider as the pilot makes sure the airspeed stays up. Sudden but smooth.

Now, why are even normal winch launches thrilling? Because you go up like a fighter jet, that's why. The nose of the glider points skywards at an angle of 45 degrees or so, and you reach release altitude in less than 30 seconds. Even an experienced glider pilot tends to enjoy it time after time! I certainly did.

An even more thrilling form of launch is rarely done now-a-days. It was called a reflex launch. The tow rope, yes a rope not a wire or cable, had a bit of stretch in it. It was attached to the glider's release point at one end, and the other end was attached to a powerful car. A loop was laid out to set a certain amount of slack in the rope, before the car went charging off down the airstrip. TWANG. I remember seeing a Blanik L13 with 2 people on board lunge off the ground in maybe 3 meters (10 feet) and commence climbing like a home-sick angel. Ah those were the days.

Pushing The Envelope

By 'pushing the envelope' I mean flying an aircraft a little closer to its limits than usual!

Something to try that isn't too extreme, but still suitably thrilling for say, your mother or grandmother, is to ask for the pilot to throw in a few really steep turns. Gliders often need to do this anyway, to stay within the confines of narrow patches of rising air called thermals. OK, how steep? Try 60 or 70 degrees. That's pretty steep, it will seem like the glider is right over on its side. What's more, mild G-forces will start to tug at Granny's face while the glider is held in the turn, and the horizon spins past.

Now it's Dad's turn. Let's rough him up a little more than Granny! Ask the pilot to throw in a couple of stalls and spins. Here's what happens in a deliberate stall. The pilot slows the glider down by aiming the nose high and holding it there with back pressure on the joystick. But with no engine, the glider can't climb like this for very long. After a little while, everything goes deathly quiet as the airspeed drops below the stall-speed of the glider. Suddenly, the nose pitches down and Dad finds himself staring at the ground way below, and seemingly diving straight at it! The glider builds up speed again, very quickly, then the pilot carefully returns it to level flight again. Dad was taken by surprise, but thinks he might just enjoy the next one!

Next, the pilot performs a spin. Everything is the same as for the stall. EXCEPT, just before the nose drops this time, the pilot kicks in full rudder. The joystick is held right back against the stops. The poor glider just refuses to fly now. A wing drops, the nose drops, the ground is right there in front of Dad, spinning around and around and around. The altimeter winds down, Mum on the ground wonders what it will be like raising the kids on her own... But no problem. The pilot deftly stops the spinning and gently pulls the glider out of the resulting dive.

Now it's The Kid's turn. He's got a wide grin on his face. Give me everything Granny and Dad had, plus more please! The Kid is game for anything, so the instructor decides to go through as much of the basic aerobatic repertoire as altitude allows. Steep turns, stalls, spins, then wing-overs, loops, a slow roll, a stall turn. A bit more tame than what you might see a Pitts Special doing at an air-show, but The Kid loves every second of it.

A Few Odd Things

I just can't resist throwing in a couple of odd-ball things that I remember doing. Firstly, the fun exercise of tossing a complete toilet roll out the clear-vision panel of the glider. Then turning back to spot the unraveling streamer floating down through the air. What's the point? To chop it into bits of course, with the wing of the glider! Yes, such fun to fly back and forth, swooping through the streamer again and again until it's time to think about landing. I can imagine some passengers would see some fun in it too. Perhaps.

A little trick I used to demonstrate to my passengers from time to time was inspired by astronaut-training. Yes, really! The 2-seater glider used to have a microphone on a curly cord, plugged into the instrument panel. The passenger would be asked to extend their hand, with the mic resting on their palm. Then, after stoking the glider up to near it's maximum speed, I would suddenly pull up into a climb. What followed next was a demonstration of zero-G. That is, weightlessness. By easing the joystick forward in just the right way, I could get the microphone to rise up off the passenger's hand and hover there, weightless, for a few seconds! If it wasn't for the harnesses, the passenger and I would have floated around the cockpit too!

See if your friendly local gliding instructor would like to do something similar to these last two!

Conclusion

Everything described from here on is very safe when done with an experienced pilot. In fact, some things like steep turns and stalls form part of the standard training for glider pilots. So be game, and have a great time!

How To Buy An Ultralight Aircraft

Who doesn't want to fly right? With all the advantages, looking for an ultralight aircraft for sale may be a great experience or a terrible one depending on how you approach it. Knowing what you're getting into ahead of time can, at a minimum, save you some hassle, and in the long run save you time money, heartache (and possibly bodily injury). So what is it about ultralights that seems so appealing. One of the more attractive things about them has to do with their almost non-existent barrier to entry. For instance, training can be completed in a couple of days, and in actuality, you don't need a license to fly them at all. It's not as easy as jumping in the seat and starting the engine; You should still take some lessons. Another plus is that with many of them, you can fold them up and put them in the back of your SUV, or truck, and take them anywhere. Finally, there are lots of enthusiasts to help you get the hang of reassembling and flying your ultralight. So what exactly IS an ultralight aircraft? Ultralights are not allowed to carry more than one person or five gallons of gas. The maximum weight for the ultralight is 254 pounds. Ultralights are not allowed to go faster than 55 knots. It has a top stall speed of 24 knots. It doesn't require a license to fly as mentioned earlier, but you must fly it while the sun is out, and you can't fly over a city or town (anywhere there are homes and businesses). You also have several types of ultralight to choose from, including powered hang gliders, trikes, gyroplanes, and even hot air balloon ultralights. A few things to look for when buying: -Needs to be a single seater, no exceptions. -Castle nuts and pins should be used to prevent vibration wear. -Make sure the rudder and pedal mechanism is well-built and the aircraft is rust-free. -The propeller should be able to spin without hitting any parts of the ultralight. -The craft should fly straight. It should be able to fly straight without constant pressure on the ailerons. -Is it strong enough? Has it held up well to repeated landings and take-offs? -What kind of repairs have been done, and does it need constant maintenance? Did the aircraft ever have something other than a perfect landing? -Make sure the ultralight has no structural problems like frame cracks or dents. -Make sure you take the time to look the aircraft over yourself. Look at the aileron's design is simple and won't pose any problems down the road.

Average Power Question... motion?

Some gliders are launched from the ground by means of a winch, which rapidly reels in a towing cable attached to the glider. What average power must the winch supply in order to accelerate a 168-kg ultralight glider from rest to 22.0 m/s over a horizontal distance of 50.5 m? Assume that friction and air resistance are negligible, and that the tension in the winch cable is constant.

Really stuck on this one... I think I;m just going round in circles and missing something easy!!!

u = 0.0m/s
v = 22.0m/s
s = 50.5m
so, v^2 = u^2 + 2as
22^2 = 2(a)(50.5)
a = 4.79m/s^2 which is required
F = ma
= 168(4.79)
= 804.72N
W = Fs
= 804.72 * 50.5
= 40638.36J
Time taken = 4.59s ( since acceleration is constant, just take the distance divided by average velocity)
Average power = 40638.36/4.59
=8850W

You don't want to need to be in a position where you're constantly holding down the ailerons to keep it flying in a straight line. -Is it strong enough? How has it held up under the wear and tear of constant landing. -How often does it go in the shop for repairs or maintenance? Has it ever crashed? -Avoid buying anything with structural problems like cracks in the frame. -Try to inspect the craft in person. Make sure the aileron design is simple to follow and fix.
