would throwing a nail under engine of moving car make it explode?

Recently I was driving when a plank of wood was thrown under my car- there was a loud bang from my engine and lots of black smoke. I think the oil sump was damaged. The engine is wrecked. Would it be anticipated that the engine would explode and could it be expected that it would catch fire, especially if there had been a spark from the electrics from braking, or using hazards for example.

Damaging the oil sump is one thing and can be repaired without loss of engine if engine was shut down immediately after oil loss.

Large sparks is another issue. If the plank were to hit the battery cable going to the starter and removed it from its mounted position, it would rip off the end, allowing it to touch ground causing sparks and fire. As for anything "Igniting" the oil under the car very doubtful.
