St. Elmo's Fire, Tesla Coil.... I have a question about this!?

What is the science behid st. elmo's fire and the tesla coil rxn. What about that flight in the 1980's over Jakarta in a rain storm that caused many unusual occurrences to happen such as the wing glowing blue, a blue ball traveling down the aisle, smoke coming through the vents, all engines shutting off etc....just want to know the science behind this THANKS!

The concept in simple words is:

in every material you have both : positive and negative charge and they neutralize each other. If you rub materials with certain proberties against each other the charges start to seperate: the positive charge in one material the negative charge in the other material. This creates a tension between the materials and when the charges " jump over" it creates a lightening. If this discharge happens over some seconds it seems the "lightenings" are dancing.

St.Elmo fires you see on ships: air of diffrent temparature and moisture content "rubs" on each other and also on the ship, when the charges discharge they can be seen as " St.Elmo,s fires", it can happen on the surface on an airplane.

It it necessary hat there is no connection to the earth to which the charge could flow.

(And that is also the reason why it is safe to stay in a car when the lightning hits it: you are isolated because rubber of he tires does not lead the energy to the earth. When you stand outside not isolated to the earth - especially in a water puddle - the lightening runs through you into the earth. The worst what can happen in the car: your hairs start to fly because charges of the same expulse each other.)

You can crate this by yourself: pull a shirt made out of plastic fast over your head while you are isolated to the earth (e.g. sneakers) : you hear this "crackeling sound" and see some sparks. Thats "St.Elmo Fires".
