How can I write off my expenses as an independent contractor?

I am a flight instructor and I am classified as an independent contractor with my flight school. I am not disputing the fact I am an independent contractor, I've signed papers declaring this and I receive a 1099 for wages. I would like to know if I can write off my driving expenses to and from the airport? I drive an hour to the airport and an hour home each day (all highway, a peaceful drive). I have a home office where I fill out logbooks, schedule flights, email students, make lesson plans, stay current with the ever changing aviation regulations, etc. I use my office quite often for work. How could I set this situation up so I can lessen the punch of high fuel costs by deducting my business commutes from my personal driving? I would like to do this so the IRS does not have a problem with it.

I've done online searches but could not find the information I needed. An answer from someone with experience in this field would be greatly appreciated.

You need a good accountant. I have been self-employed over 10 years. Many thigs are tax deductible some are not - you need to learn what is and what is not. A log book for business, for work miles driven and gas are tax deductible, if you have a lease it is more of a tax deduction, home office is tax deductible as are many other things like printing, office supplies, postage, health insurance etc. Be careful with meals and dry cleaning. Also keep all receipts for purchases over $25

Flight Instructor Career Information : How to Become a Flight Instructor



Can my flight instructor fax the sign-off to take the written test directly to the testing center at my FBO?

Hi, My instructor is away and I will be taking the private pilot knowledge test in a few days. He said that he can fax the sign off to take the test directly to the FBO where I will be taking the test. I just want to make sure that this is allowed. He says it is but I just want to verify. Thanks

Legally, Yes it is. by signing your endorsement for the Test he is Legally binding His name to the document that says under the appropriate FAR's You're okay to take the FAA Written.

At this time I'm sure you've begun filling out the information on IACRA, if not you will be soon.

at the end of the IACRA Private Pilot certification form as I recall, it asks you if all Information is True, and that Falsifying information on a Government Document is punishable by Law etc. etc. etc.

at that point, you Type in your Name and click Submit.

That's also a Valid signature, no matter how you mark it, if you Signed for something, and that document is faxed, electronically transmitted, etc. etc. etc.

Your Signature is your Signature Regardless, the only thing that would let you loose is if the signature was actually forged, at which time the person who forged it is now a Felon.

Your instructors Signature on the Endorsement, whether it be by Fax, or Electronically signed, etc. etc. is His signature. He is Liable for the validity of the signature unless it was forged, Your mark is your Mark, no matter how it's Transmitted if he Agreed to something *He agrees that you may take the written* and put his mark on it *His faxed signature with the endorsement* It's a Legally Binding Contract.

so this will be fine, some places won't do it since it's much easier to Forge something electronically than in person, *Car dealership for example*. the FBO doesn't have much to lose though money wise, neither does the FAA on this one.

Good luck on the FAA PPL Written, it's not a horribly difficult test, but this is where Paying attention in Ground school will pay off.
