Court Martial Of Billy Mitchell

Court Martial Of Billy Mitchell

$12.73

In this 1955 Otto Preminger film, Gary Cooper stars as World War I hero Brigadier General Billy Mitchell. The film recounts Mitchell's efforts to prove the viability of a strong air force. The hidebound military higher-ups refuse to finance aviation any further, figuring that the strength of the United States lies in its navy. When a friend is killed by flying a faulty plane, Mitchell charges the War and Navy department with incompetence and criminal negligence. When the brass tries to quietly court-martial Mitchell, they are forced into the open by the strength of public opinion, largely in Mitchell's favor. Subjected to the grilling of prosecutor Alan Guillon (Rod Steiger) during his trial, Mitchell sticks to his guns, even outlining a potential Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor unless the military wises up and strengthens its air power. Elizabeth Montgomery makes her film debut in the role of Margaret Landsdowne. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Guide

Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind

$12.72

Assembled by filmmaker Susan Lacy, this 90-minute TV documentary charts the life and career of Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. In a starring career that spans nearly four decades, Mitchell embraced an infinite variety of musical styles, with folk and jazz in the forefront. Linking the narrative together with Mitchell's most famous lyrics (35 of her songs are represented in all), the film overflows with precious concert clips, some familiar and some shown for the first time (a rare glimpse of Mitchell performing Blue at a 1974 concert). Also seen are home movies of Mitchell with such co-workers and intimates as David Crosby, James Taylor, Graham Nash, and David Geffen. Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind originally aired as part of the PBS documentary series American Masters. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Hal Erickson, Rovi

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Mitchell

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Mitchell

$16.96

The last episode featuring Joel Hodgson as comedic curator of the Satellite of Love, MST3K: Mitchell introduces Mike Nelson as Frank and Dr. Forrester's auditor. Typically film-and-literature-aware, this episode features mispronounced Latin dramatic phrases and the onscreen replacement of the show's host and 'bots-creator Joel with newly presented Mike. Kubrick fans will appreciate the homage by Gypsy on the spaceship, as the scientists continue their evil hi-jinx remotely. Meanwhile, Mitchell proves to be a winner of the wacka-chicka award, as Joel and the robots survive their viewing of the 1970s detective feature. ~ Sarah Sloboda, All Movie Guide

Electric Edwardians: The Lost Films of Mitchell & Kenyon

Electric Edwardians: The Lost Films of Mitchell & Kenyon

$25.46

At the turn of the 20th century, filmmakers Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon were commissioned by touring showmen to shoot a series of local films for local people. The result was a series of shorts filmed between 1900 and 1913 that painted a vivid picture of Edwardian England by capturing people from all walks of life at work and at play in their natural environments. Subsequently locked away for decades and assumed lost to the ravages of time, Mitchell and Kenyon's films were discovered in the basement of a photographer's shop in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, in 1994. Six years later, more than 800 of Mitchell and Kenyon's film reels were donated to the British Film Institute, and preservation measures began almost immediately. Taken from 28 hours of footage, the 30 short films included in Electric Edwardians are split into four segments entitled: Youth and Education, Workers, High Days and Holidays, and People and Places. A specially commissioned score by Sheffield-based musical duo In the Nursery accompanies the films. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Except for Boxcar Bertha, all the DVD's in this collection include commentary tracks from Scorsese and his collaborators, as well as bonus materials. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Guide Band (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm, and Garth Hudson). The show took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, at San Francisco's Winterland Arena--where the group had played their very first show more than 16 years before. In order to make their farewell even more unforgettable, they recruited numerous guests to join them onstage. They include Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, Neil Young, Ringo Starr, Paul Butterfield, Ronnie Hawkins, and the Staples. Martin Scorsese, a former roommate of Robbie Robertson's, employs some of the world's greatest cinematographers--including Michael Chapman, Vilmos Zsigmond, and Laszlo Kovacs--to film the set in a way that captures the show's sweat and energy with a powerful intimacy. Interspersed into the songs are a series of interviews with the Band's members, who recall their early days playing for empty bars and their emergence as major players in the rock & roll game.NEW YORK, NEW YORK: NEW YORK, NEW YORK concerns Jimmy Doyle (Robert De Niro), an aspiring saxophonist who meets and is at first rejected by singer Francine Evans (Liza Minelli). When they continue to bump into each other, a friendship blossoms, followed by romance, and then marriage. All the while, both musicians struggle to succeed at their craft, which begins to put an unbearable strain on their relationship. Eventually, this weight becomes too heavy to handle, leading the couple into a traumatic separation. Scorsese's obvious love for this era of music--as well as cinema--is overflowing throughout the picture, from the set pieces to the costumes to the musical numbers.RAGING BULL: Shooting in a crisp black and white, Scorsese tells the story of middleweight boxer Jake La Motta, played with incredible intensity by Oscar winner Robert De Niro. As La Motta rises through the ranks to earn his first shot at the middleweight crown, he falls in love with Vickie (Cathy Moriarty), a gorgeous girl from his Bronx neighborhood. Jake's inability to express his feelings pours out in the ring and eventually takes over his life in his dealings with his brother, Joey (a brilliant Joe Pesci). Irrational jea
