What is the best cb radio for me?
Ok so my friend got me a CB from a yard sale (Cobra 29 LTD Classic) but the built in speaker doesn't work, and I just found out that the little needle indicator thing in the top left of the cb isn't working. So I had already spent like $25 on a little speaker so I could hear, and now I found out that the needle doesn't work. I'm going to just return the speaker and get my money back and buy a new CB radio. I want one that is durable, has a good broadcast strength/distance, and will last me a long time. The thing is that I can only spend about $120 tops (after tax). So what CB would be right for me? It's going to be used in my vehicle. I already have 2 antennas that I got from a yard sale. One came with my broken CB, and the other is nicer, but I don't think I can mount it without messing with it, so I might need to purchase an antenna too. Any help would be appreciated.
Since maximum output power of any CB is limited to 4 watts (12w SSB), you're not going to get any better distance from one CB than any other. The good news is that you don't need all the bells and whistles. Volume, Squelch, Channel Selector are all you need, Clarifier for SSB, the rest is fluff.
Get a helically wound coil (Firestik) for cheapest, best results. Mount it in the center of your roof for best results.
I believe SSB capability starts at around $120, so you may want to just stick with an AM unit. Those can be had for about $40, you just don't need anything more than that. A Firestik or similar antenna, about $20 or so. You may want an SWR meter & jumper, about $30, to adjust your antenna for resonance.
