What exactly does an RMI (Radio magnetic Indicator do) do?

I'm making a report on RMI and all infos. I got from the web confuses.
If possible could you explain the important parts.... thnx

Ok parts of the two above are correct but not all. RMI's are an Old system of navigation. The RMI would show the relative bearing to a non directional beacon (kinda like an AM radio station). Some RMI's had rotating cards some had fixed cards. The difference is that on a rotating card RMI the pilot can rotate the background of the instrument to make it easier to figure out the aircraft's relative bearing to the transmitter. The RMI was so often misused and misunderstood that it lead to the invention of the VOR. Very few of the latest model RMI's have an overlaid VOR Course deviation indicator on the RMI. There is also a third kind of RMI that has a rotating card that is slaved to a remote sensing compass that turns the card automatically to magnetic North. Basically you only see them used in emergency situations anymore because the low frequencies the stations transmitted on would "skip" around on the atmosphere and you could end up navigating to a station 3000 miles from the station that you intended, which happens to be on the same frequency. Lightening and other electrical storms (norther lights) would make them do really strange things as well. Not a cool way to navigate but it worked better than anything else in its day but that day is long past. hope this helped and was not overkill.

What exactly does an RMI (Radio magnetic Indicator do) do?

If possible could you explain the important parts.... thnx

The important thing that an RMI does is to "slave" the card (the circular "backing" showing magnetic headings or bearings) to a remote compass, so that the magnetic heading of the airplane itself is always at the "top" of the instrument. The needles still function as standard ADF needles (they always point to the station), but the slaved compass card behind them takes all the mathematics out of determining bearings to or from the station - it's right there on the face of the compass card, below the head or tail of the needle. RMIs definitely simplify flying NDB approaches, or even intercepting bearings to or from a station.
