ultralight aircraft short range flight's?

just wondering there was a few "ultralight aircraft" listed in my local classifieds and i have been planning a visit to Bimini it is an Caribbean island off the coast of Miami Florida. i have never flown before always wanted to take classes just never have gotten around to it. i have read a lot and it seams that the average range is 100miles with a cruise speed of around 50mph so easy math says its possible and shouldn't even come close to the limits of the ultralight. but is it smart to fly an ultralight over 50 miles of open ocean? are there more winds or any concerns you dont see flying over land? just random thought and random question =P thanks for entertaining my random thoughts

Most ultralights use 2-stroke engines, which are generally much less reliable than certified aircraft engines. Personally, I wouldn't fly an ultralight beyond gliding distance from land in case the engine quits.

Second, ultralights in the US are not required to be registered, nor is the pilot required to be licensed. This means that it's not legal to operate an ultralight in a country (all countries except the USA) where such aircraft are required to be registered and flown by licensed pilots.

Third, a 50mph cruise speed is airspeed. If, for example, you have a 25mph headwind (not at all unlikely at altitude over the ocean), your groundspeed is only 25mph, which means your travel time is doubled and your range is cut in half. Yes, you might get a 25mph tailwind so you have a 75mph groundspeed, but you can't count on it.

Ultralights just aren't intended to be traveling machines; they're for fun around the local airport.
